    The magnificent five

Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag, Ganguly – who contributed the most during India’s Golden run in Test cricket

By Jaideep Varma & Jatin Thakkar

    Part 1 of 2 | Read Part 2

It is now clear that the Golden era of Indian cricket is coming to an end. Or more likely, it ended in 2011 itself; it has just taken us this long to confirm it.

By all accounts, that period began during the early days of Ganguly’s captaincy and ended last year in South Africa – under Dhoni’s leadership, with India still the official No. 1 Test side. The World Cup victory that immediately followed was the last hurrah.

Besides bowlers like Kumble, Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan, batsmen like Gambhir and wicketkeeper/captain Dhoni, the five people most responsible for this were the members of the famed batting line-up – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag.

Impact Index does a Test cricket analysis here to determine who contributed the most, in which period, how they combined with each other and what it all really means at the end of it. We examine certain truisms, identify some myths and confirm some facts.

We divide the entire analysis into 5 phases –

    1)    November 1989 to June 1996: when Tendulkar began and gradually became India’s most important batsman.

    2)    June 1996 to November 2000: when Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid played alongside in the early days under Azharuddin’s and Tendulkar’s captaincy.

    3)    November 2000 to September 2005: India under Ganguly’s leadership.

    4)    September 2005 to October 2008: India under Dravid and Kumble.

    5)    October 2008 to January 2012: India under Dhoni.

The Golden Age constitutes all of phases 3 and 4, and a good part of phase 5. But what came before it, and a little bit of what happened after, helps in understanding the contributions much better. Listing the 5 highest impact batting performances from each phase sharpens the picture even more.

You have forgotten that Ganguly's fighting 144 or so in Brisbane when India was down but not out brought out India's fighting spirit which then pervaded the whole Team. Recentle, Mark Waugh in his coverage ( New Indian Express) of the current Series has refereed to in detail

all are great but dravid has been struggling over the years he did score 5 centuries last year but he got bowled out 10 times recently he changed his bat using very narrow bat compared to using a broad bat before in general he lost his touch and technique has become vulnerable and as far as being match winner is concerned except sachin all have won lot of matches for india

dada u r right with the fact..... but if my memory is right then he has scored few runs during the series in england.... so for me he still can do well.... i know what u said u mean what i mean.... because u know all of them very closely.... i know i m no one to say all these because u understand more than me.... but what i felt i wrote.....

ganguly(dada) must become the manager or the coach of the indian cricket team, because he was the one who rebuilded india strongly....... he was the one who taught india how to min in india & in abroad........ he was the one who had that ability to make steve waugh wait foir half an hour before toss..... still now for me he has the abiulity to rebuild this team again when they are in trouble........

Well said. Dada still has many aces up his sleeves. His career was shortened by only controversies with Greg Chappel.
Time has come for the English coach to leave!
The fabulous 5 should be relieved to prepare a team for the future.
Rahane, Kohli, Irfan, Rohit, Tiwary, Saha and Ashwin are the guys to be nurtured.
But I do not see a terrific fast bowler showing up!
What about Lillee Pace foundation? Has it served any purpose?
I suggest the top Indian batsmen should get their eyes checked up for being so frequently bowled / LBW and wear contact lenses like Dada if required. Trust him......... it really helps!!!!!!!!!!!!
      • sudipta 3 months ago
well said friend..... and thanks for ur support.... u r absolutely right.... because dada is the one who will again reconstruct our team..... why india choose only english coach???? indian coaches have died or what!!!! and if our choice is indian coaches then for me its dada who can pull other team's socks and put them in pressure......

Just like the nation, I hope all these players are not enjoying the way they are performing. They have always answered questions about their retirement with comments like, I am still enjoying it and I have plenty of cricket left in me etc. If they continue like this there will be a day people will heckle them. Why are they unable to see the writing on the wall. people who have crossed their expiry date are: Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Dhoni, Sehwag. Zahir among bowlers can also go, though he has not done too bad, he is ageing and it is showing. I hope Bhajji and Yuvraj also remain out. Without all these guys we may lose, but (i) what else is happening now (ii) at least we will be training youngsters. Dhoni is Ok for 1 dayers. His luck has run out.

Test is the form that taxes cricketers as it is played over 5 days. But youngsters are in 20:20 and test is played by people who are ageing. This is an irony.
      • Raghavan 3 months ago
WELL IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THEY ARE ENJOYING IT OR NOT . THEY ARE NOT PERFORMING . HENCE IF THEY DONT PERFORM THEY MUST BE FORCIBLY RETIRED BY DROPPING THE ALL THE TOP 5 BATSMEN . AND ZAHEER KHAN AND ISHANT SHARMA.

It is indeed a performance-based fair assessment of India's batting line up, which served the Indian cricket with distinction for over a decade. Of the five, only Shewag may continue for another five years or so, but he should play at number three or four-dop position and not as an opener any more. Ganguly enthralled spectatrs all over the globe with his dare-devil accomplishments. Now, the time is ripe for Dravid and Laxman to make a crucial decision on their playing international cricket. However, the little master may continue at least for another year; and during this period, it is fondly hoped that he gets the most elusive but coveted hundred of hundreds the soonest, which will enable him to plan his retirement. Players of the previous generation shold not and need not continue, when their physical and mental toughness has started to deteoriate. One may consider the fact thare is no replacement for the genial Kumble. Even Harbhajan Singh has started losing confidence in him-self and his performances became pedestrian following India's debacle in England. Dhoni should also introspect that luck has deserted him. Captain cool should not become Captain avuncular. All in all, ther is a phase when people think more about nation's iterests first than their accrueing benefits. That said, the magnificient five have done us proud with their achevients over time. The constant refrain of most of the Australian players (who are generally found unsportive and biased) that Sachin, Laxman and Dravid are great players but they shold score centuries after the conclusion of the on-going series is not acceptable, to say the least. On the other hand, BCCI's decision of refusing DRS has drawn flak from the cricketing communty besides harming India's reputation at the international level.

WHY SHOULD SEHWAG CONTINUE HE HAS NOT PERFORMED IN THE LAST 16 INNINGS HE HAS PLAYED OVERSEAS AND HE IS NOT FIT
    • Mahesh  •  3 months ago
Oh so many here are finding fault only with sehwag?????????? Allan Border,Garifield Sobers said sehwag is the modern day batting legend.I wonder whether they dont know the things but still they want to make impact in the commentary columns. He failed this time in AUS but the last series(2008) is the return of the sultan.

Foreign selectors from Australia and South Africa must be appointed to select the Indian team.

Can't understand by the word "aged" !! Is 38/39 mean end of motor skills, any mental problems?? spatial loss ??....can yourself agree that you are dead old man @ 39...Its just natural that we lost game..noting to do with age !! ..JUST see how Ricky made a triple & double when they said he is aged ?so plz leave the senior players.

The Sun has to set allowing for its rise once again. The fabulous five of Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman and Sehwag have served Indian cricket admirably. Barring Sehhwag, time has come for others to retire from Test Cricket. While no one can question their cricketing skills, the reflexes cannot be same with advancement of age. Unfortunately the realisation comes only after a string of failures. They should be made to retire honourably and serve the game in other capacities.

We have enough bench strength and we should blood the Test team with youngsters and also make them play in pitches like what they face in England, australia and South Africa. Also our emphasis has to be more on Test and ODIs, reducing the importance of T 20. If BCCI cannot decide the correct priority for the game then it should be divested of the responsibility. Amarnath Sury

Ability is always with Indian Team But Lack of effective briefing at their disposal taking the side to a Chronic Situation in recent couple of series.
    • partha  •  3 months ago
Parth. Kolkata. Dhoni should be dropped along with Dravir immidiately from the Indian crickek team. ashok dinda and saha should get few more chances so that they will able to prove themselves.Shachin should get at least one last series to build up the record which will be next to impossible for any other cricketer to think of.
    • Gautam  •  3 months ago
i think this is the rise of indian cricket. finally they can play a test of 5 days
    • karthik mahakala  •  Utica, United States  •  3 months ago
SEHWAG deserve the place..........we won most of the tests because of his terrific start....who had 2 triple centuries and almost the third (293) in indian team?. At present he is the only aggressive player in tests for Indian team. cant blame him for just a failure of one or two series.Sehwag ROCKS................BOWLERS WHO TROUBLED THE INDIAN PLAYERS WERE TROUBLED BY SEHWAG ALL THE TIME..............

Kick out all seniors including Dhoni Except Sehwag. Sehwag must be the captain of Indian team in any form of cricket. Bring fresh blood in the team so that within 1/2 years they would be the champions.
