Sacking Ponting was tough, says Clarke

REUTERS - Australian captain Michael Clarke has said he was partly responsible for the sacking of former skipper Ricky Ponting from the one-day squad.

Clarke wrote about how difficult the decision had been in a newspaper column on Thursday, while adding that the 37-year-old Ponting remained a "huge part of our test team".

"I'm 100 percent part of the selection panel - that's part now of the captain's job," he wrote in a New Ltd column. "We've made this decision as a panel.

"It is tough not having the great Ricky Ponting out there... playing one-day cricket for us but that's the decision we've made."

Clarke replaced Ponting as captain after England completed a 3-1 Ashes series win on Australian soil in January last year, becoming part of the national side's selection panel.

Ponting's axing from the one-day side earlier this week as Australia build a side for the 2015 World Cup triggered fierce debate in the country.

Without peer in the 50-overs game, Ponting has racked up 13,704 runs in 375 matches at an average of 42, also winning three World Cups in his 17-year career, two as skipper.

After accepting his one-day international career was over, Ponting said he would continue in test cricket and hoped to play in the 2013 Ashes.

His test place had also been under pressure at the end of last year but he responded with 544 runs at an average of 108 as hosts Australia whitewashed India 4-0.

Glarke has to remember one thing ,his days in the australian line up is also numbered ,because except for his performance against recently held series against india he is also not so consistent in the oneday format unless he finds some constant form there ,othewise very soon he will go the ponting's way and watson will take over ,but given ponting's fame if he finds his touch again given his fitness and passion for the game ,i feel ponting has chance in both the fomats ,i mean onedays and tests as well ,lets see

icc ranking has nothing to do with the performance that counts for the moment what i meant was clarke might be superior in statistics compared to ponting in the recent times but if ponting is at his best clarke is unmatchable to ponting ,for instance what happened in today's game against lanka the aussies lost convincingly ,ofcourse it was a close match no doubt but ,if you have noted or watched the game closely you would have seen the aussies missing some close runout chances , in ponting's presence he would not have missed any opportunity with a direct throw at any point ,thats for sure ,thats why i say ponting is so important ,because he simply puts you under pressure as a closein fielder

Every body has to their job. Ponting failed as captain against and he paid a very heavy price. Clarke will have to be and will be careful in not following Ponting. If he is loosing, not performing he has to volunteer to move out or one more Ponting will happen. However in India it is not so. The records only speak and NOT performance. If either BCCI or team management follow the Australian way, most of the members of the current Indian team will be another Ponting. BCCI and Team Management wake and follow Australia so that Indian Cricket will look good. Do NOT encourage great grand fathers and grand fathers. Give these oldies - Sachin, Sehwag, Dhoni, Dravid, Laxman the PINK slip and let them relax at home.

I admire the courage of Clark of accepting the responsibility of a decision. I wish our cricketers also displayed similar courage....
