All rounder Mathews named Sri Lanka's new T20 captain

Johannesburg, Oct 25(ANI): All rounder Angelo Mathews has been named as Sri Lanka's new captain for the next one year following Mahela Jayawardene's resignation after their World Cup final loss to the West Indies.

The selectors will review Mathew's performance after 12 months in charge, and if he performs well he would be considered for the Test captaincy as well.

"We are giving Mathews a free hand to captain the T20 side for one year after which we will review his performance," Sports24 quoted chief selector Ashantha de Mel, as saying.

Mathews's first assignment will be to lead Sri Lanka in a one-off T20 international against New Zealand in Pallekele on October 30.

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been named at the T20 vice-captain, also for a one-year term. (ANI)
