Ranji Trophy Round-up: Tendulkar shines on Day 1


Group A


Mumbai Vs Railways

Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Sachin Tendulkar (137) and Ajinkya Rahane (105*) struck centuries to power Mumbai to 344/4 at stumps, after being asked to bat first by Railways skipper Sanjay Bangar. Anureet Singh emerged as the best bowler for the railwaymen, taking the wickets of Kaustubh Pawar and Tendulkar.

Gujarat Vs Madhya Pradesh

Venue: Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore

Parthiv Patel led from the front with a superb 162 as Gujarat finished with a total of 327/5. At stumps Manprit Juneja (42) and Akshar Patel (12) remained unbeaten. Anand Rajan (2/67) was MP’s best bowler, accounting for Smit Patel and Niraj Patel.

Hyderabad Vs Punjab

Venue: PCA Stadium, Mohali   

Akshath Reddy top-scored with 63 as Hyderabad finished day one at 244/7 after being put into bat by Harbhajan Singh. Manpreet Gony (3/51) and Amitoze Singh (3/33) were the pick of the bowlers. VVS Laxman struck four fours before losing his wicket for 23.

Bengal Vs Rajasthan

Venue: Eden Gardens, Kolkata

Bad light stopped play as Bengal finished with 187/4 on day one. Opener Subhomoy Das was unlucky to be dismissed on 95, while skipper Manoj Tiwary made 42. Pankaj Singh emerged as Rajasthan’s best bowler taking 3/30.

Group B

Delhi Vs Uttar Pradesh

Venue: Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Ghaziabad

Big names like Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag failed to deliver, as Delhi were bowled out for 235 thanks to medium-pacer Imtiaz Ahmed’s haul of 5/52. Delhi’s total was made possible by Puneet Bisht (52) and Mithun Manhas (42). In reply, UP were 40/1 with Mukal Dagar (18*) and Mohammad Kaif (3*) at the crease.

Haryana Vs Vidarbha

Venue: Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, Rohtak

Umesh Yadav (5/18) and Sandeep Singh (4/11) ran through Haryana’s batting order; bowling them out for 55- their lowest ever total in the Ranji Trophy. In reply Vidarbha finished at 78/2, with Shiv Sunder Das (20*) and Shalabh Shrivastava (1*) walking back unbeaten at the stumps.

Tamil Nadu Vs Odisha

Venue: Barabati Stadium, Cuttack

Rain played spoilsport as Tamil Nadu finished with 66/2, after Odisha asked them to bat first. Murali Vijay (15) and Subramaniam Badrinath (11) were the batsmen who lost their wickets, while Abhinav Mukund (21*) and Baba Aparajith (3*) managed to hold fort before the covers were brought on.

Baroda Vs Karnataka

Venue: Moti Bagh Stadium, Vadodra

Irfan Pathan (105*) and Aditya Waghmode (121*) struck a 220-run partnership to rescue Baroda from a precarious position of  88/4 to a commanding 308/4. Stuart Binny was Karnataka’s best bowlers with a haul of 2/30.

Group C

Assam Vs Tripura

Venue:  Nehru Stadium, Guwahati

Dheeraj Jadhav top-scored with 127* as Assam made 220/5 after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Medium-pacer Timir Chanda  took all five wickets,  while conceding 50 runs from his 23 overs. At stumps, Jadhav was batting alongside J Syed Mohammad (4*).

Jammu & Kashmir Vs Jharkhand

Venue: Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground, Jammu

Jammu and Kashmir were shot out for 195, after they won the toss and opted to bat first, with Shahbaz Nadeem (3/50) and Shankar Rao (3/50) amongst the wickets. In reply, Jharkhand were at 81/1, with  Rameez Nemat (42*) and Rahul Shukla (0*) at the crease.

Kerala Vs Himachal Pradesh

Venue: Amtar Ground, Nadaun

After a delayed start, Kerala finished day one at 196/8, riding on an unbeaten 100 from Sanju Samson. For Himachal Pradesh, Rishi Dhawan took 3/56, while Gurvinder Singh (2/47) and Vikramjeet Malik (2/43) took two wickets each.

Services Vs Andhra Pradesh

Venue: Rural Development Trust Stadium, Anantapur

With the elements registering their presence, Services were struggling at 73/5 after being asked to bat first by Andhra Pradesh. Atchuta Rao (2/33) and D Shivkumar (2/15) were amongst the wickets for the hosts.
