Rain plays spoilsport

New Delhi: Rain played spoilsport in the Ranji Trophy semi-final between hosts Services and Mumbai on Friday as the third day's play was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

The umpires Adrian Holdstock and Subrat Das made a customary inspection after lunch before deciding to call off the day's play following Thursday night's hailstorm and a steady downpour on Friday.

Such was the fury of the hailstorm that it damaged one of the sightscreens at the Palam ground here and ripped up the pitch cover. And by the time the ground staff arrived in the morning, it was too late to control the damage. The organisers, however, were optimistic that the match could be resumed on Saturday.
