Calcutta: Interacting with the media in Colombo a day ahead of Australia’s semi-final clash against West Indies, Cameron White expressed disappointment over his team’s loss to Pakistan, but expressed confidence about winning the semi-final.

“You talk about every game, (whether) you win or lose. You have a quick review and move on from it. But in terms of the other night (against Pakistan), we were just outplayed. As simple as that,” said White. “There are certain stages that you have to win and we didn’t win them the other night.”

White said that the victory against West Indies in the group game gave Australia a fair degree of confidence going into the semi-final. “We need to start afresh now. We batted especially well against the West Indies last game. Obviously, we need to rejig a couple of our plans. In the course of the next 24 hours, we’ll sit down and make sure we get those plans as clear as possible going into the West Indies game,” said White.

Saying that spin had played a large part in the tournament so far, White acknowledged that the spin options West Indies have were a cause for concern. “They have got quite a few spin options. When you look at the Pakistan game, they bowled nearly 18 overs of spin,” said White. “I’m not sure West Indies will bowl as many but they’re using their leg-spinner (Samuel Badree) upfront and some more spin in the first six and throughout the innings.”

Of course, White was asked, like everyone else is, about the Chris Gayle factor. “I guess they rely on getting away in the first six overs and it so happens that they’ve got Gayle who is one of the best hitters in the world. Sure, he’s going to be a big wicket like (Shane) Watson and (David) Warner in our team,” said White.

At the end of it, however, White said that Australia held the edge going into the match because of more time spent in Colombo as compared to the West Indians. “We have played every game here in Colombo. So, we know what the conditions are going to be,” said White. “We have played the West Indies before. So we know what we are going to be up against.”
