Mohinder’s argument clinched it

Calcutta (The Telegraph): Mohinder Amarnath, who is under fire from some of the units in North, batted “very strongly” for Delhi’s Virat Kohli during Wednesday’s selection committee meeting in Mumbai.

A member of the 1983 World Cup-winning XI, Mohinder is representing North on the committee headed by Krishnamachari Srikkanth.

“When his colleagues were debating whether Virat should really (again) be burdened with additional responsibility, Mohinder argued that he’d got two hundreds after being named the India vice-captain..."

“Virat scored an unbeaten 133 against Sri Lanka in the tri-series, just before he was appointed the vice-captain for the Asia Cup... Then, in the Asia Cup, he scored 108 versus Sri Lanka and blasted 183 against Pakistan...

“Mohinder’s colleagues, who were a little concerned that Virat may stop playing freely, found his argument convincing... It didn’t take long for them to retain the youngster as the vice-captain,” a well-placed source told The Telegraph.

The India squad for Sri Lanka includes both Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. While the former has been a stand-in captain in Tests and ODIs, the latter has captained in ODIs.

Virat, therefore, could encounter moments where he will have to tread with much caution. That ‘mentor’ Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain is bound to help.
