Chennai: Javed Miandad, a former Pakistan captain and coach, is set for a trip to India, his first in over seven years since he became the most-wanted Dawood Ibrahim’s samdhi.
According to well-placed sources of The Telegraph, both in India and in Pakistan, Miandad will be in New Delhi for the third and final ODI, on January 6. Officially, he’s going to be a “goodwill ambassador” of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Till late on Sunday, it couldn’t be confirmed if Miandad had already been issued a visa. However, one understands a visa will be issued to “every former captain” who seeks it.
Bottom line being “goodwill.”
Miandad, now 55, married his son, Junaid, to Dawood’s daughter Mahrukh in July 2005. While the wedding was in Saudi Arabia, the reception was held in Dubai.
That Miandad forged family ties with India’s most wanted fugitive had left many stunned, both in India and across the border.
A dim view had, of course, been taken by the Establishment in New Delhi. However, seven years on, ‘leniency’ is being shown towards an outstanding batsman and a smart tactician.
Bilateral cricket has been revived after five years, with the ongoing tour being Pakistan’s first to India after 26/11.
