Man killed, girl friend hurt in suspected honour killing

New Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) A 20-year-old man was shot dead while his teenage girl friend is battling for life after being shot here Sunday in what police suspect to be a case of honour killing.

Jitendra Tomar was found dead around 7 a.m. with a bullet in his chest in north Delhi's Chauhanpur area, while his friend, Jugnu Singh Yadav, 16, was found shot in her chest inside her home in east Delhi's Karawal Nagar area around 4.45 a.m., police said.

The two lived in adjacent colonies and were reported to be in a relationship, said a police official.

Tomar's family has accused the girl's kin of murdering their son.

"We found a country made pistol lying near the Tomar's body," said a police officer.

The man's uncle, Sanjeev Tomar, told police that Jitendra got a call on his mobile early Sunday morning and he left the house.

"He told me that it was nothing to worry and he would return in half an hour," said Sanjeev.

The uncle alleged that the girl's family killed his nephew.

However, Jugnu's father Virendra Singh Yadav said he saw his daughter lying injured on the stairs inside their house around 4.45 a.m. He claimed she told him someone had shot her. "We rushed her to the hospital," Yadav told police.

"Someone might have climbed into the house and shot at her and then fled from the spot," Virendra told police.

In the rear of the house, police found a rope hanging from the roof of the house.

Jugnu has been admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital where she is battling for life.

Police informed Yadav about Tomar's death and that his body was found a few metres away from their house. However, he told police he did not know Tomar.

"It is too early to say anything about the case. All the suspects are being interrogated and the probe is on," added the officer.

Investigators are trying to ascertain the circumstances under which the two were shot.

Besides the angle of honour killing, police are also probing whether the youth shot the girl before killing himself.

"It is a matter of investigation whether the youth first shot at the girl at her house and then killed himself or some others plotted to eliminate both of them," said the officer.
