Sri Lanka knock India out of Women's World Cup

India crash to 138-run defeat at the Brabourne Stadium.

Mithali's wicket triggered an Indian collapse. Scores

Mumbai: Hosts India were eliminated from the 2013 Women’s World Cup with a massive 138-run loss at the Brabourne Stadium. The win has propelled Sri Lanka into the Super Sixes, with England being the other qualifier from Group A.

Sri Lanka posted a massive 282-5, but India needed just 251 to remain in contention on the basis of their net run rate. The failed miserably.

In Group B, Australia beat New Zealand. Both teams had qualified for the Super Sixes. Australia finished the league unbeaten in three games.

Sri Lanka elected to bat in conditions that have been good for batting here. Jhulan Goswami struck in the first over for India getting rid of Chamari Atapattu. But Sri Lanka fought back brilliantly with the bat before reducing the Indian batting to rubble.

The essence of the Sri Lankan innings were big partnerships and a good finish. Yasoda Mendis (55, 80b) and Deepika Rasangika (84, 109b) added 121 for the second wicket, followed by 67 for the third between Rasangika and Shashikala Siriwardene (59, 67b).

But the differentiator was Eshani Kaushalya – 56 off 31 balls with six fours and three sixes – which helped Sri Lanka add nearly 100 runs in the final 10 overs.

India made a steady start with Thirush Kamini and the skipper at one down, Mithali Raj. But once Udeshika Prabodhani trapped Mithali LBW with an in-cutter, India collapsed.

Sri Lanka’s slow bowling was spot-on and their fielding energetic. India didn’t have a chance after they were reduced to 50-4. It was perhaps sweet World Cup revenge for Sri Lanka who missed out in this very city in 2011.
