Kohli and Gambhir – India’s real chasing giants

And why these two are ahead of even Dhoni

Winning the World Cup could be attributed to the excellence of Gambhir, Kohli and Dhoni in big chases.

By Jaideep Varma and Jatin Thakkar

April 2, 2011. Mumbai. The final of the Cricket World Cup. Lasith Malinga and all his Sri Lankan teammates exulted as Sachin Tendulkar was caught behind and India was reduced to 31 for 2, both star openers gone. A nerve-tingling, nervous moment for most Indian fans, who felt their chance of winning the World Cup after 28 years was in serious jeopardy.

    They were wrong.

They had no way of knowing that the five batsmen India still had left actually had better credentials of delivering in those circumstances than both Sehwag and Tendulkar. To its own surprise, Impact Index discovered that Gambhir, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni and Raina - all - had a higher Chasing IMPACT than the two openers under pressure situations, and also Finishing IMPACT (chasing and staying not out).  What followed thereafter is the stuff of history of course, but it is interesting to note how consistently the core of this Indian ODI team has maintained this remarkable quality.

Chasing consistently is considered the most difficult function in ODI cricket and teams who have batsmen doing that well always thrive. Lloyd’s West Indies (1975-1983), Gavaskar’s India (1985), Ranatunga’s Sri Lanka (1996), Waugh’s Australia (1999), Ponting’s Australia (2003-2007)…all were magnificent chasing teams in their pomp. Dhoni’s team has been too, which is why it is not a coincidence at all that even before winning the World Cup 2011, the team had some notable successes like the 2008 CB Series in Australia and some bilateral series, especially away. Over the last two years particularly, chasing has been an important part of the team’s success. To illustrate this - India won 59% of their ODI matches in 2010 and 63% of that while chasing. In 2011, India won 61% of their ODIs, and 70% of those were while chasing.

On April 2nd 2011, the moment Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat, they actually put themselves at a big disadvantage but they had no way of knowing the formidable chasing unit they were looking at. The table below provides a revealing view.

These are India’s ten best chasing batsmen in its ODI history.

Saurav Ganguly advised this to Dhoni repeatedly! he advised Dhoni to come higher up the order! his strike is so good and his Odi average is excellent! He will certainly get more overs to play And that will be good for India!

See If opening pair scores some good runs with in 10 - 15 overs any total can be chasable easily ex. this match 100 runs scored with in 12 overs that 434 run chase match Gibbs and Smith made good start like that so many ex.. are there.. after coming out from series they learnt this how sad....

Give a send off party to Sehwag and Tendulkar.
Appoint Gambhir as captain and Kohli as vice captain. Dhoni can be a player for now and compete with other wicket keepers for his place. Drop people not in form. Strictly go by form.

xcuse me...captaincy is not so easy...gambhir may have lead team india against the out of form team new zealand...but rest team...he hav to be more xperinced

gambhir is not fit for captain but he is a good player.....dhoni is alwaya a good leader and captain...

You are right Mahesh. Captaincy is not a joke. One has to deserve it. Only MS deserves

This is what can happen if you criticize India batsman's but the victim is Srilanka not Kenya or Bermuda. 321 in 37 overs is not a joke in chasing. Watch out to Indian players don't blame them. Shut up X players. - Bharath

Someone should say BCCI to request Sachin and Sehwag to say good bye. For them some rising stars are not getting chance. Why Sachin is so selfish about his century. Better Sachin should take rest from International cricket and continue his practice and when he feels he can score his century he may come. And about Dhoni, many are making mistake to comment on Dhoni, remember Gambhir may have scored 97 in fnal, but he was out leaving India in a critical situation from where Dhoni handled it. If these upper order batsman donot score such runs then for what they are playing in that order, they have been given the resposibility for that only. Dhoni is World's no.1 match winner, But see with whom he should create his partnership, with tail enders? So someone should think 100 times before commenting on Dhoni.

ya ya.. dhoni would have played very nicely if gambhir not scored that 97 in that crucial time wen india was parading to pevillio.. dhoni would have played till the end scoring 50 in 100 balls and would have said batsmen didnt do their job..!!! he played so freely cos gambhir was there on the other end.. and he didnt even given credit to gambhir's effort in the post match ceremony.. great politician he is..

what is really hapening is that Sachin is resting for 2/3 ODI"s to recuperate and a newcomer is facing a severe mental stress to perform at his slot! you do not expect this to happen on regular basis! I felt sorry for these poor guys!
    • Saugata  •  2 months ago
Have faith in our youngsters and don"t treat them like kids! They are our future! they need to be groomed! Just need to get the best combination by trial and error method!
