Kapil ashamed but says time to back India team

New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) India's legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev Friday said he was ashamed with the cricket team's performance Down Under but felt that under-fire captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni deserved to be backed in troubled times.

"As a cricketer, I feel ashamed by the Indian team's performance. They are not playing well and have gone wrong in every aspect of the game. But the team needs our support. Dhoni is our captain and we should back him," said Kapil, who famously led India to its maiden World cup triumph in 1983.

Dhoni, who gave India its second World Cup victory in 2011 after 25 years, has hit a rough patch. The team suffered a 0-4 whitewash in England, where it was also dislodged from its No.1 Test status.

Dhoni's defensive captaincy in the Test series in Australia has been severely criticised. India are also trailing 0-3 in the Border Gavaskar Trophy and are on a seven-away Test losing streak.

The India captain has also performed poorly with the bat scoring just 133 runs at an average of 16.5 in his last eight innings. Dhoni has also hinted that he may retire from the longer version of the game by 2013 keeping in mind the 2015 World Cup.

Kapil said it was time for the fans to back the team.

"Yes, India have played very badly and we are all unhappy, but let's talk about them only after the series," Kapil said.

Kapil said criticisms directed at some of th seniors players were unwarranted as six month back they played key roles in taking India to the No.1 spot in Tests.

"It is unfair to call them names as this is the same team that was world No.1 only about six months back and was doing well. These are the same players who have made us proud so many times in the past. But now if they are not doing well, what can be said," said Kapil.

Kapil also said that it was unfair to blame Twenty20 for India's debacle in Tests.

"The team was playing T20 and one-day cricket even a year or six months back and were still performing well in Tests, so I don't think it is fair to hold the shorter versions of the game responsible for the team's show in Australia," he said.

Kapil said the team just needs to belief in itself and hoped India to do better in the fourth and the final Test in Adelaide.

"In the middle of the series, I don't think there should be any change in the team. They are a good side. I just hope that they can put their heads together and play as a unit. The team just needs to believe in itself and the captain must also believe in his side and look after himself as well as his team. It should try to script a comeback and we must all support the players in their endeavour," he said.

Kapil Ji, a BIG fan of you, what you people had and what lacks now is the spirit and motivation, Dravid said, we lack the spirit as the Australians punised us physically and metally and I just witnessed them scoring runs all day long, we wish you'd have been there filling the tired hearts with hope.. You strongly believed, if not we, not anyone. Make our team realize they have been choosen from half a billion people who can play cricket! Love You Sir!!!! We miss your presence in today's game(BCCI). Cricket has become wall street with people focused on business, now go there and be the cricketer making it a Sport Paradise!!!

Why we try to keep the same team for years together and deny opportunity for new young talented players. Is it because of flaw in the selection system?

A core team of 30 players be developed and rotational policy be adopted to groom youngesters

I do agree with Mr.Kapil..and whats even more disappointing is the pathetic way the team lost..An innings defeat in all cant be happening..There is seriously wrong somewhere. Either the team is not playing as a single unit..else there are huge failures in all the departments..may be just a bad phase(goes with the saying *There is a lite at the end of the tunnel*..Or, The Men in blue are over-dosed with money..endorsements.fame and glamour..they got it all man! so mite be a loss/win ...be a big deal for them. One actually cannot predict within the team .-POLITICS, behind the closed doors of the BCCI- POLITICS again..and the Individualism & Favouritism also plays a villainous role here..Keeping an Individual's record ahead of the Country's pride & victory..one would expect such shameless defeats..Skipping off the net sessions, go-kartings, accepting defeats just for the heck of it wont be doing any good for the team, NO TRANSITION thing going on in the selection committe speaks of further more debacle..well!! I can go on..and on..and on..I just pray This debacle ends soon for the team..:(

I agree what candyfloss says, but one thing we should remind ourselves is that the same team kapil representated australia tour or any other tours or earlier captians before him, did lose the series with huge defeats.. So you just cant blame indian team for this. This team is good than the older team which all the legends speak of...BCCI is the main culprit here. They wont let indian players play county crickets which is played internationally.. If they are given a chance they can perform well domestically and internationally..These are the same players who played well against aussies in their home ground or in india..
So the youngsters should be given a chance from here onwards.. We may lose places in the points table but if BCCI plays dirty politics,,,they should be taken for accountability......

Indians should not feel ashamed of the BCCI team because it is a team of Individuals who are under employment of the corporate houses and they are entangled in the commercial ads and every thing. They find place in the team not on merit but purely because of commercial reasons. It is a one way love affair of poor Indian Fans who unknowingly had made cricketers demigods. I think the best way to respond is boycotting the products endorsed by Gautam Gambhir, Sehwag, Laxman, Dravid, Dhoni and Ishant Sharma. These cricketers bearing tags of Indians have let the country down. They did not feel ashamed and never tried to sort out the technical issues. They did not apply also. They did not rout their heads down and play for the sake of country. Winning and losing is a part of the game but losing with out fail is not acceptable. BCCI people, Selectors and Indian players have shown utter shamelessness. Why same openers Sehwag and Gambhir find a place in the team after failing regularly because of poor technique and temparament. Old horses Dravid and Laxman should have given way to promising youngsters.Because of lack of confidence in Indian Batting India had been regularly playing 4 bowlers only. They do not have any all rounder to back it up. Dhoni has never tried to correct his defense and bats as if he is least bothered about getting out. It is a sold out unit.

      • Kunal sharma 3 months ago
rajnish is cent percent right and sachin should also be included among common other players.it has been proved in last few months that he is not the so called god of cricket. He is merely like other players.

Its true what Mr. Kapil has said here.
We need to learn Backing up (Supporting)
Everyone in Life dont win always
When you win you need appreciation and the most important is
When you fail you need support.
Simply to say, if you fall inside the well, you need a rope tied to the beam to climb up
Lets act as the Rope and Team Management will act as the Beam
      Please support Indian Cricket
      Jeetho India Jeetho

      • LOLZ 3 months ago
I agree with you both that everyone does not win every time but what's really disappointing is not the loss but the manner in which the team lost.We simply refused to learn from our mistakes in spite of having no injuries in the team. The Indian team failed to put up a fight or even show a fighting spirit unlike the last series down under which we nearly won.

Had India included Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina together with Virat Kohili and Aswin, they would have definite won the first and third test and drawn the second. Shewag had failed miserably and he should not have been given the captaincy, as a punishment.

the desire to win has got satiated after winning the world cup in india. Genuine and fast pitches have rubbed a salt on the wounds inflicted by under performing individual heros.

What one should know about Australian wickets are , they are bouncy fierce pace tracks designed for their bowlers and we in India lack good quality pace bowlers, hence the collapse. Don't blame the captain or any player. Repeat the same 4 test series in India and find out the difference. It's an open challenge to anyone.

It look strange when such a great player make this type of statement. Every team has its lean period. After all players are human being. They also get their off days. Everyone knows Indian have never been a great players for rising or swinging delivery. Ausis hv prepared wickets which suits them being home advantage and if any thing is left has been done with mind game, sort of instilled fear in Indians mind that they are to play on fastest of pitches.. Things have been complicated by non performance of our opener and all who followed got awed with demon in the wicket. Had our opener done well, things would hv been lot easier.. Please dont cry. Let the team play. Once they are back then all these players should put their head together and analyse and find the reasons for such debacle.

Look how Pakistan demolished England. 1) They have a genuine quick, 2) They have a genuine spinner, 3) They have team spirit and maryada, 4) They are playing for their country and God.
India does NOT have a Kapil Dev anymore (Remember his 175 no after top 6 incl. all round failure Shastri had headed for the bogs?). India does NOT have a trier like Gavaskar/ Roger Binny/ Madan Lal/ Kirmani/ Chetan Sharma.
India has a bunch of 11 individuals counting their IPL money, endorsement money, ad money, investment income money. India has galacticos who should have been ruthlessly retired 5 years ago. Good God, even now, Very Very Smooth Laxative and Wall Full of Holes are likely to retain his slot!
If 2 disastrous tours are not enough to tell Srikkanth and company about "Dho dalo"'s poor captaincy skills what more do they want? Take a gamble, make Yuvraj the captain,it might spur this guy on to better and bigger things. (His cricket skills have never been in doubt, he just needs some motivation)

Kapil could not win the test series in Australia under his captaincy or during his coaching days when sachin was captain. It was almost the same team.
Poor Vijaya bharatwaj was an extra baggage to Australian team who did not play a single match and cameback to India. He was eventually dropped to next domestic series. This is kapils contribution as a coach.
Vijaya Bharathwaj was man of the series prior to australian tour.
But next tour he was out of the team without playing a single match
And now kapil talks about being ashamed or what ever..
S india does suffer overseas.. but it not something new which we see today
Ganguly and kumble were far better cap tains in Australia

I agree with Kapil partially,Yes I am also ashamed of our Cricket team but I should not be backing them because they are professional and they should be performing well all the time. kapil was gentelman and was always swetting for the team. Those days are gone when World cup winner team of 1983 was doing all they could do to win but the current team is surrendering to the Down Under. I am more ashamed now than the loss at England because Down Under is a new team. Except Pointing, Michael and Hussey no one has played more than 10 or 15 tests and atleast 4 of them are brand new, while in Indian team we have many players who palyed mroe than 100 tests.
They are lion inside and cat outside.
This IPL and T20 should stop because the players are after the money and as we all know they were not available for play in England because they were injured after IPL. Shewag is also dull, by making a century in one game agter failing in 20 is not called Star batsman. The star bastmans should be consistenat.
I am glad that now in India we have developed interest in other game like Football, tennis, car race, Boxing, Shooting etc.

why should the people feel ashamed for the cricket players.what else do think will be the performance of players who are just thinking of adds, money and fame.where does the country's name come.nowhere.they are busy doing modelling and commercials.so where is the time for practice.gone are the days of Kapil, sunil Gavasker.thus i donot understand why so much money is given to them along with ranks.the govt must salary them also like others in the country.Well! they are just doing a job like us.so its a must for them to be best in their field.i would only say it is time they play.and the govt should take players on merit and also have entrance where an ordinary young boy can also apply to join the team.just not from schools.

Can't you feel that Indian Cricket Board should get ashemed? Our boys are playing since last so many seasons-They may need rest, afterall they are not cricket playing machines. This way game of cricke will loose its charm.

Lots has been said about "Dhoni's defensive captaincy".
Can't Understand how a Captain can be aggressive when all 11 players are underperforming.
Whats the point in being aggressive when you are losing??? ;-) ;-)

What they should have is not self belief. Instead what they should have is self-respect. How can one expect a 100th 100 when he is not able to take a minimum of 25 runs per inning. And he is known as Master Blaster. My foot.

India won T20 World cup, then ICC World cup 2011, before this, several matches we have won and lost. Still today one can say India Team is 2011 world cup winner. it is difficult(even we can say NOT possible) for any team in the world to defeat Indian team in India soil, and in similar note it is difficult to defeat England team in England & Australian team in Australia. In my point of view after loosing England series, if any team would have visited to India for a series against Indian team, then Indian team would have won the series.
So I feel no worries, if any cricket team wins match in their own country, be it England team or Australian team. Hope our team has learnt a good lesson from last series of matches and will definitely prepare a strong team to achieve top position in near future.
