    Indian batting self-destructs again

Indians might have just failed to take their last chance in this series.

Sachin Tendulkar walks from the field after being run out by David Warner in Sydney.

By Jaideep Varma and Jatin Thakkar

Australia 252/9; India 165 (Australia won by 87 runs)

The scorecard of the match is here.

India undid the good work that their bowlers did for them when Australia batted first and soundly repeated their recognizable theme of the Australian summer - resounding failure with the bat. It was only during the 7-over (from the 8th over to the 16th), 44-run stay from familiar quarters - also the biggest partnership of the innings, when India actually looked on even keel, perhaps even ahead. But it all ended abjectly, pusillanimously...familiarly.

This is the match seen through the Impact Index prism.

    Australia

    India

    Observations:

    David Warner
, with an innings of 66 in 68 balls, within the context of this match, was easily the highest impact player of the match. He absorbed the pressure of 57 for 3 and was out at 107 (in the 21st over) and was largely responsible for there being no run-rate pressure on the Australians.  His was the highest impact batting performance of the match and he was rightly given the Man-of-the-Match award.

Shane Watson provided the highest impact bowling performance of the match - despite being saddled with captaincy responsibility in his very first match after his injury break. As the premier ODI all-rounder in the game today, he lived up to his IMPACT numbers, and followed up a disappointing early dismissal with the highest Economy IMPACT of the match to go with his 2 crucial wickets when India was beginning to stabilise, which also registered the highest Pressure Building IMPACT on the match. Along with the impact of his captaincy and his two catches, he had the second-highest impact in the match.

Matthew Wade, Australian wicketkeeper, produced a crucial 56 (off 66 balls) at a crucial juncture (107 for 4) and had the third-highest impact in the game.

David Hussey, who was very lucky to survive an obstructing-the-field appeal at a crucial juncture (it is strange how many laws are being allowed to be rendered useless due to this nonsensical application of the "spirit-of-the-game" sentiment; a good percentage of penalties in football would not be given if a similar logic was applied - "self-defence"), was the fourth-highest impact player of the match with his 54 in 64 balls - it took Australia to considerable safety, which in the end, perhaps made all the difference.

Warner and David Hussey were the only batsmen in the match to absorb pressure successfully.

Xavier Doherty and Daniel Christian produced the only all-round performances of the day. Doherty's 13 (in 9 balls) and 2 for 26 (in 7.3 overs) getting him a Batting IMPACT of 1 and Bowling IMPACT of 2.40 respectively. He was the fifth-highest impact player of the match. Christian got 24 in 32 balls, and then pitched in with 1 wicket for 8 runs…all of which got him an IMPACT of 3.08. It was that kind of a match.

Virender Sehwag's unexpected spell of 3 for 43 in the end-overs had an impact of 2.94 and a very minor contribution with the bat actually narrowly made him India's highest impact player. It is a sad reflection of India's poor batting performance that just 5 runs in 11 balls could have even registered any kind of impact.

Praveen Kumar was India's best Test bowler in 2011 and the star when India won the CB Series in 2008. So, it had been very perplexing why he was not being given an extended run in this tournament, especially after a somewhat rusty beginning to this campaign. That sanity was perhaps on a rotation basis too was somewhat demonstrated today as he was overwhelmingly India's best bowler - he helped India begin the match very well. He was India's highest impact bowler and had a significant Economy IMPACT.

Umesh Yadav was the only bowler to have a Partnership-Breaking IMPACT in the match. His two wickets got him a reasonable impact in the match but his negative Economy IMPACT undid a lot of his good work.

That the much-vaunted Indian batting failed miserably can be seen from the fact that Ashwin and Pathan were India's highest impact batsmen, with scores of 26 and 22 respectively. They might have just failed to take their last chance in this series.

Overall, Australia had a Team IMPACT of 2.42 as compared to India's 1.57 in this match. A big gap to reflect the sorry state of Indian affairs, especially with the bat.

It seems India team is stuck in reverse gear and they do not want to experiment. The case in point is Sehwag. He is known to be the most destructive batsman and once he is out the team oftenseems to fold. Itis long due that he should go 2or 3 down in batting order. it would give him chance toevaluate the situation and then bata accorndingly. It is difficult to understand as to why Infan was not sent much higher in batting order rather than to send him when it was lost case. He should be sent 4 down or so, ahead of Raina, jadeja,Ashwin and even Dhoni. He might just help consolidate the inning. Dhoni shoni should experiment on giving wichet keeping chore to Dinesh Karthik and concentrate on regaining his oustanding batting form and being the best Captain that he has been. He is perhaps putting too much pressure on himself that is taking away his active form.

It is proved that Shewag is a big liablity to the Indian Team. How else can he be described as a total failure. Now he has confirmed what Dhoni has mentioned that contribution from the top order batsman is needed for a victory. Shewag needs a good break similar to what Harbhajan is having. Allow him to tune his batting skill before he stakes a claim in the team.

All the big guns has to play only in Indian pitches were they will score centuries and even double centuries, we run behind youngsters when Senior's are not doing well and vice-versa,
were in both of them are not contributed as a unit. It is clear signs of disunity among s the members and lack of confidence to win and perform. when they left to Australia, they were highly over confidence. the white wash in the tests made them mentally weeker to win in one dayers, even though they had upper hand over Srilanka they not even competed against them.On the other hand Srilankans has really done well to come strong as unit thats Y they succeeded and adjusted to the conditions well. You Srilankans really deserve to Win the Series all the best to win against the aussies.

Well untill that elusive 100 is made, unfortunately nobody in the team has a choice but to keep patience. Its been the world cup, tour to england, west indies tour, england tour in India, australian tour......but the 100 simply refuses to come. Even after umpteen attempts, the 100 still refuses to come. So much for records. first of all the Indian mentality of being associated with 100s has to stop and change, the selectors need to change and team building needs to be done where individual landmarks need to be sacrificed for the Team, only then the Team Wins! look at Micheal Clarke's 326* not out and declaring the match so that Aussies Win. Had it been an Indian, 400 runs would have been in mind.

i agree when in 2004 pak series dravid declared with tendulkar on 194 so that india gets enough time to go for a win, tendulkar had a big fight with dravid . this speaks classic case of individual performance above country , again mark taylor declared on 333 just coz he did not wanted to break baradman record. can our record chasing mongesr even think like that. DISGRACE

Now our Team will play in IPL for Money. When India matters nobody is bothered. Why Sewag has been playing ?. Why Raina is playing? why even Sachin is Playing? Sewag has been continously Failing even in Matches & also in ODI's. History Proves that he will now play one Match & scores the Runs & then Selectors has to retain him.It is absolutely Disgusting & Disturbing with Such poor Performance by the Indians.
I will not Watch IPL matches & appeal to all that No one shuold Watch IPL Matches.

Ban IPL, Its the most rubbish thing to have hit cricket. Less work and more money. Till IPL is banned indian cricket will go to turmoil. These useless greedy indian players are looking for IPL. Now no one will take rest. Why not the top 10 players like Dhoni, Sehwag, Gambhir, Raina, Sachin, Zaheer, Kohli say that we have played too much cricket lets take a break of 3 months from cricket. Greedy Board, Greedy Players, IPL 5 KA SATYANASH HO !

indian players need rest as they have to play for their franchisee for IPL and if they had entered the finals then they wld have to return on 10 mar but now they will return on 01 mar as a result they get more time for practice for IPL and more so dhoni feels it imp to retain the IPL trophy than the tri series as the prize money involvd is more so dont blame them it is that they wan tto do reallly well in the IPL thus they have formulated this strategy, v all mus b blamed that v get glued to IPL to if v boycott it then for whom will they play and from where vl they get the revenue to pay the players as the ICL died its own death theIPL tooo vl for the better of INDIAN cricket, it shld always be remembered the interesr of thr nation always vl come first but here it is franchisee and self , chao

It was indeed painful to see the demoralizing state of Indian Cricket team in recent past. Its high team for the management and selectors to request senior player like Sachin and Sehwag to retire from cricket and allow and teach the younger players how to play and keep them self as number-1 team.I feel the entire aim of present team touring Australia was to ensure Sachin`s 100th century, not to win.One should take the lesion how Ponting has been dropped in the middle of the tournament. My heads off to Australian team the way they fought to reach a respectable status

the absolute truth is that nothing is in favor of the Indian team... and I got a better plan for tuesday's game line up-
1.S. Tendulka ( should be the anchor player and not any fancy shots)
      2. G. Gambhir ( should be the same as tendulkar, if tendulkar gets out)
3 V. Kohli (should blast! as he can do it well and suits for it... if there is no sehwag but only at bad bad balls... )
4.M. tiwary( should try his best)
5.MS. Dhoni ( if chasing the match shouldn't get to get to a stage where only you are the left batsmen, and take time but don't play that slow as u are one of the big hitters and can do it well...)
      6. I. Pathan( should bowl well and go for the big shots and don't waste deliveries)
      7. Y. Pathan (call him for the match...)( should blast from the start and hit 6's and 4's if we are in the drivers seat only or need qiuck runs out of less deleveries but hit in the gaps so no wicket from here on...)
      8. R. Ashwin( bowling should be his priority and if u are not among'st wickets, slower the run ret... and hope u don't have to bat and the match dose'nt goes to you...)
      9. Z. Khan ( be like brett lee and keep everything slow and support yadav and make him bowl fast deleveries, but in the correct lines...)
      10. R. Sharma ( would be a great spin combination with ashwin as off and leg spin would be there)
      11. U. Yadav (open the bowling and try to be the strike bowler)
well that's my idea but more or less we are out of the tournament so there's no hope... :'(
