India needs different captains for the three formats: Ganguly

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly isn't impressed with current captain MS Dhoni's comments that the senior players are being rotated in the ongoing Commonwealth Bank Series because they are 'slow fielders' and also said the time has come for different captains to be appointed for the three formats of the game.

    Video: Seniors = Bad fielders?

"Time has come for the selectors to decide three captains for three formats. At the moment there is too much cricket, too many formats," Ganguly said, and added though fielding is important in ODIs, scoring runs in tough conditions is also equally important in the 50-over format.

Ganguly also took a dig at Dhoni continuing to support a player like Suresh Raina, despite the southpaw failing to justify that backing. "I agree (Suresh) Raina has to go but the problem with Dhoni is that he is thinking too far ahead, the 2015 World Cup," Ganguly said, and added if Raina doesn't improve his technique by then he is bound to struggle in the 2015 World Cup. "The selectors will have to look at young players who can perform," he stated.

Virender Sehwag, one of the three seniors who are considered to be 'slow fielders' by Dhoni added fuel to the fire on Tuesday when he said, they had been told the rotation policy has been put in place to ensure the youngsters in the team get a chance to bat on the Australian pitches. "Dhoni told us he wanted to give chance to the youngsters who are expected to play vital roles in the 2015 World Cup. He never told us that slow fielding is an issue.” said Sehwag after India's 51-run loss to Sri Lanka at Brisbane in the CB Series.

Sehwag pointed out to the catch he took to dismiss Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene at the Gabba; before adding he has no issues with the rotation policy and is available for all the matches in the CB Series. "I am putting this on record that I am available for all the matches. It depends on the captain and coach what eleven they pick. If they give me a reason that we are giving chance to youngsters and we need to take a break, I am happy with that," he said.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketers like Bishan Singh Bedi, Dilip Vengsarkar, Maninder Singh, Chetan Chauhan and Kapil Dev, have also slammed the controversial rotation policy. While Bedi said it make sense to rotate players only if they are in form; Vengsarkar opined it was fine to rotate players as long as team's winning prospects were not jeopardised.

Former India spinner Maninder Singh branded the rotation policy "utter nonsense" and said, "He (Dhoni) was forced to have a rotation policy because it is not easy to drop a Sachin Tendulkar or a Virender Sehwag. This is a forced rotation policy, I don't agree with it. Rotation policy is okay when there is a winning streak. This is utter nonsense," Maninder said.

Chauhan not only completely disagrees with Dhoni's statement but has also questioned the timing of the policy at a time when the team is going through a tough phase. "I completely disagree with what Dhoni has said. These three guys were an important part of the team during your World Cup campaign only nine months back. And in nine months they suddenly cannot become worse as fielders," he said. Chauhan feels Dhoni's statement is an attempt at diverting attention away from India's comprehensive whitewashes in the Test series in England and Australia. "I believe that Dhoni is trying to divert attention from his failures of the last two Test tours. This is a time when everyone should stick to each other rather than casting aspersions," he stated.

India's 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev accused Dhoni of favouritism in the team and said he was bewildered at the decision to not bowl Ravindra Jadeja in the crushing 110-run defeat against Australia in Brisbane on Sunday. "If you are an Indian captain, you cannot be partial. I was surprised when Rudra Pratap Singh was drafted into the Test side in England. One must find out why all rounder Jadeja was not used as a bowler even for a single over in the ODI against Australia at Brisbane," Kapil was quoted as saying by Aaj Tak.

Captaincy issue arises after the selection of the team. If Dhoni does not want to play test cricket and Dravid, laxman, Sehwag and Gambhir are out of test squad then Raina, Ashwin or Tendulkar ( for short period ) can be given the charge. Kohli's behavior is very bad and should never be made the Captain. In ODI Dhoni is the best captain. While we should not scratch our scalp for Twenty Twenty format which shall die shortly. For 20-20 you can select the team on a rotation basis and select the captain also on the rotation basis. It is absolutely non serious cricket where mediocre bowlers like Balajee with super slow stuf will escape punishment and woill remain in demand and bowlers like Styn and Brett Lee will be miscued hit for fours and sixers

I am n't sure who are the players Dhoni is betting for 2015 WC. But its for sure that he is the one who start favoritism in the team....
Is it sure Dhoni himself is going to play 2015WC.
He is probably forgetting the role of Tendulkar,Sehwag and Gambhir in his rise as a captain of team... You leave out these three player's record during his tenure as captain and see where the team stands...

I agree with you bro...If Dhoni continues to do this then he will surely place YUVRAJ also in this policy as he is senior............

Okay.....If he wants to give place to juniors, then why don't he add himself in the rotation policy?
      • pri 2 months ago
ya ashish y he isnt then giving parthiv or saha a chance bt the rotation policy....... he knows that he can be removed as a test captain dats y he is playin politics by rotating the contendous of captain ( sehwag , gambhir )

why so worry for droping Sehwagh and Sachin in name of Rotation of Players.
Any way they are not performing and are burden on the team.
    • Yogin Koppikar  •  Bangalore, Karnataka  •  2 months ago
What rotation? We do not have 11 able bodied players who can perform consistently well. There is one consistency - streak of poor performance, lack of effort and politics. India does not take long to reach from hero to zero status! Consistent non-performers need to go, however big their past reputations.

Actually the present condition of Indian cricket team is chaotic to a great extent. Whenever anybody is in front of the media, he, be the captain or any other member of the team, is trying to speak out his own voice, not the voice of the team. It' clear that there is enough difference in opinion regarding the team management, but all these issues should be resolved in the dressing room only, not in front of the media.
    • sata  •  Bangalore, Karnataka  •  2 months ago
When there is already lack in consistency of the players in the team, then more stress should be put on that aspect. Rotation policy, in such situation, can only cause more confusion, rather than implanting more confidence in the players which could lead to more consistent performance. When a team has excellent playing 11 as well as very strong bench strength, then this policy can be thought of. Otherwise, in difficult scenario, a team should look for playing its best 11, and at most one player can be swapped, may be, for the sake of experimentation and providing opportunity to another new player in the same role.

In three different formats three different captains may theoretically be a very good option if one considers that all the players are not egoist. But that would be an aberration of truth since in this world most of the people are more or less egoist, leave the feel of egotism. And as the quality of the players go, it's highly likely all the three captains would play at least in the two formats, which may again create clash inside the camp. However the reason that Ganguly has pointed out is the excessively packed up schedule, which is also really a genuine fact. But to implement his opinion, BCCI has to ensure that there is no egocentric clash inside the camp.

Both Dhoni and Sehwag have to be disciplined. The toothless BCCI is not bold enough to suspend their contracts till they come up with suitable solution to the rift. So many passengers in the team. Rohit, Raina, Umesh, and the seniors except Gambir to a certain extent have all become passengers. Long time planning is the only solution. Buckup BCCI.

it is first time in indian cricket a family member goes front to support her husband and critisised other team players. they must know it is an indian team not dhoni s own team. each player has equal rights and place dhoni is no one to decide who is bad or good. it is the task of selectors . just he is to lead the players he is being provided with.

Dont understand why Umesh Yadav is playing. We should have played the ODI's with our best bowlers.from my perspective Zaheer,Praveen,Irfan and Ashwin/Vinay kumar should be playing. Umesh Yadav has pace but he should understand that in ODI's he has to improve his economy, even if he doesn't get wickets, His economy is always above 6-7.
I find varun Aron better bowler than him but he is inexperienced.

Greedy, Ganguly...was one of the worst fielder that is the reason he got offended with Dhoni’s comment, he wants comeback as an Indian test captain that’s the reason he is camping for three captains for three formats. Also, he will bring back all other senior retire greedy player in the test team to make our Indian cricket lover fan happy. Just see kya haal hota hai Gangoly ka upcoming IPL mai.
Its really unbelievable that In a country of 1.2 Billion populations, we can not find youngster to replace the senior players because cricket loving fan they are so emotionally connected with the seniors that if this seniors continuously fail for 10 time to perform they don’t have any problem but if youngster they fail 4 to 5 times then fans will blame the person who wants give chance to youngster for future of our country & accuse him as a politician, destroyer of the team & etc.
Most of the people who are making the comments hear I think they have not played this game because there is not enough play ground left in cities now days. Just watching Cricket match on the TV you don’t become expert. Guys, you are not thinking about our country, go on the field after you become 35 year old, then you will realize just to stand on the play field for whole day how much energy you need, I know because, I have played this game.

U speak like a RAM(GOAT) there is very little reason behind your thought?????
      • Abhijit 2 months ago
Rubbish, U r really a Ramgoat. By writing such a big comment u tried to spread the message “I have played this game". I think most of the commenter here had played such "local club cricket" like u. Nothing to boost.
U don't know the roll of a captain on field, and making comments on the great Sourav Ganguly. Learn the history, captain has to be a good player but the most important in his part is to take a decision on field, manage all the 11 players on field. And it is not so easy until u have an acceptance by other players. If u r accepted by all the players, only then u can commend them. This job was wonderfully done by Sourav that to in those days when Indian Cricket was suffering from betting distress. BCCI tried to put the baton on so many strong hands even like Sachin Tendulkar, but he refused it after few matches. Then came the brave Sourav to take the charge. The honest and bold one who brought back the unity, friendliness in the dressing room, and a Team India formed.

I don't know which RAM you are. However I've also got no reason in logic behind getting so much personal about Ganguly. I think, you are very angry with him, because, he didn't give you a scope to get into the Indian cricket team, though you have played this game !!!

Good Joke! This guy talks about fielding as in issue without taking into account the crucial run out/stumping chances he misses at this level! Like Clarke he also set wide first slip in Aus tests forgetting one important thing - Haddin dives and makes up for the first slip but Dhoni and Rahul Dravid/SRT just look at each other when ball flies in between them! Clarke shud have been out for 30 and he score 329* !

Pressure erupts like this occasionally. BCCI, where are the Psychologists? They are supposed to talk to the players under starin to keep up their morale and prevent such isssues. many teams have them for mental conditioning. BCCI you earn a lot of money but never spend it properly. Moreover fitness regime and fielding has to improve and practice is a must whoever the player be, otherwise let them get lost. BCCI, reduce the amount of cricket or the Golden Goose is already cooked and would vanish.

Mr. Dhoni..... you are in indian team because of your luck and you cann't deny it.Do you think just playing a good knock in final of world cup ensures lifting trophy.Did you play an inning before that in whole tournament? So don't vomit non-sense talks. If whole team is not playing good, then don't put blame on 3 greats.Whom are you giving chance,rohit,raina.... then look at their performances in the series......Gambhir did all efforts (91 runs) to win game against Sr lanka but you thought to be a hero by chashing 12-15 runs as did against australia (again luck factor). The way you play in test cricket, you cannot be in among 30 players.
      • Rashid 2 months ago
Dhoni,,You are the no. one captain in the histroy of Indian Cricket, let dogs bark.... Dhoni... you are true captain who never gives in soon, don't leave your toughness and self decision abilities. I stand with you Dhoni. God bless you.

sehwag doesnt deserve a spot in team...then how can he became captian...sehwag is over ambitious...defenitely kohli is the future of indian cricket...now dravid and laxman are around the corners of retirement from test...so chossing captain for test side is very difficult..only two seniours is perfoming well now...if dhoni is removed as test captain...make gambhir or zaheer as captain for india in tests ...and give saha more chances to play in test...as in odi no one is better than dhoni...he is a complete package for odi...give kohli the chance of t20 captain and groomed him to the captain of test side after the retirements of dravid ,laxman and tendulkar
      • Varindar 2 months ago

Dada is right... i completely agree with him.. but this situation would have not arised if the BCCI selected a better captian for Indian side aft retirment og Ganguly. BCCI selected captain based of his performance which was really super(at that point of time) before the IPL spoiled the seriousness of Test cricket(Specially for Indian Team).Mr Dhoni if ur reading this comment my advice to you "PLEASE STOP PLAYING CRICKET FOR INDIAN TEAM AND CONCENTRATE ON UR IPL".As a team captain its ur responsibility to manage the team and support the players who are underperforming..ooopppsss sorry..I forgot.how can u fill confidance and support when ur not confidant. All cant be like ganguly. He to was not in good form but he knew how to LEAD the Team
