    India doesn’t understand fast bowling

There's little support for the peerless Zaheer Khan, and India need more than the occasional brilliant spell from Ishant and Umesh.

Zaheer swung the Kookaburra ball as he did the Duke.India were comprehensively outbowled here in Australia in much the way they were in England. On both occasions, India had their moments but moments don't win you games. Relentless attack does. And India didn't have the armoury or, dare I say it, the know-how to do it.

Zaheer Khan was once again India's best bowler and for sheer skill he has few peers in the world game. He swung the Kookaburra ball as he did the Duke and his ability to set up batsmen, especially left-handers, of whom there has been an extraordinary crop in recent times, was wonderful to watch. But Zaheer now needs to be handled carefully and the opposition knows that. They aim to play him out (except of course for Warner at Perth!) and reap a harvest at the other end.

It was the other end that India are struggling with and I say this in spite of the strides that Umesh Yadav took on this tour. Clearly, he wants to be a fast bowler and anyone who advises him otherwise doesn't have India's interests at heart. He bowled a good outswinger, has a yorker and a decent bouncer but the length of the ball is still not at his command. And so he leaked runs but worryingly, when he was getting his figures tarnished, he seemed to be lonely at the top of his run. The great Wasim Akram had Imran Khan mentoring him from mid-off and mid-on till he learnt to think a player out. Yadav doesn't have that support yet. But he was one of the real pluses of this tour.

Ravichandran Ashwin showed a lot of heart but he needs the surface to be his ally just yet and Ishant Sharma continued to plug away neither taking too many wickets nor really looking like he would run through a team. The strength of a system is determined by how well it nurtures and develops its talent and if India lets Ishant go, it will be a severe indictment of that system. To be honest, India doesn't understand fast bowling but to win consistently you need to.

India needs not an occasional Ishant and Yadav, not an occasional spell from them, but a production line of such bowlers. It is a problem but one, I greatly fear, that is not perceived to be so.

Yes, Team India indeed unearthed Umesh Yadav on this disastrous tour but team selection for each test has been inexplicable. We lost a golden chance in Melbourne with none of the three greats Sachin, Dravid and Laxman not contributing enough for victory. Zaheer Khan needs support. Our fast bowlers have to bowl in the channel day in day out as the Australian bowlers did. That is really what made the ultimate difference.

first make good fast pitch in india. and why everybody avoiding Sreesanth? he has done verygood in abroad. where is irfan pathan?
    • Sandeep  •  26 days ago
I seriously don't think fast pitches are needed to be a good fast bowler. if thats the case then look at all time greats like Wasim Akram and Glenn Mcgrath
these guys were not fast compared to Akhtar and Lee however their line and length was immaculate
combination of line and length plus swing did it for them everytime they came in and bowled and that was consistent throughout their ten over one day spell or test spell

now pakistan doesn't have fast pitches its the same mud as ours. How do they produce fast spearheads like waqar, wasim and shoaib
but why not us as a big country
to tell you the truth we give more importance to our batsmen and treat them as God's
      rather than encouraging fast bowlers
it's true that good score is needed to win matches
but who defends those good scores is a good bowler
someone who can come in and rip through the batting
someone who can come in and scare the opposition
from indian point it looks like we're always trying to hard never able to make an impact to scare the opposition
you all just think for a moment
how do you feel when you see Akhtar charging in like a train or Lee sneaking in like a spearhead
you feel that something is going to happen
someone is going to get hurt or wicket is going to go down
same with wasim akram he was so sharp in his approach
and that killer instinct in all of them was amazing
      well our bowlers lack it
that fear is missing from opposition when our bowlers charge in
the opposition is not at all scared
you see recordings of last four tests against aus
they have these new bowlers all of sudden who are not as fast as lee or akhtar
but they have that consistent and immaculate line and length
that our batsmen had to try and invent shots
India needs aggressive guys be it bowling or batting
someone who can come out like matthew hayden or lance klusner and hit out any opposition or take anyone
someone like wasim akram and akhtar who can rip apart any good batting side
india needs more people with killer instinct like the ones mentioned above rather than gods'

instead of Ishanth Sharma, Vinay Kumar or Irfan Pathan should have been picked. There might have been some improvement in the bowling department.

Not only the batsman failed, the bowlers didnt had a game plan and sting in their attack, all wayward length to the batsman runs, no homework, when the batting is failing, least they should have changed the batting order, someone other than dravid coming up at No. 3. Coach is just sitting for his pay cheques, nothing else. Ever since he took over, team India is on decline

very true that fast and furious bowling has always been India problem. They have always relied on spinners which have won them plenty of games. Fast bowlers are like jewels in the crown which India does not have. Time to work in this departmeny.

I feel that, whatever be the type of pitches prepared in India,Australia and England will at least make an earnest effort to fight it out, very much unlike our champion test team, which threw away all 4 tests repeating the same mistakes in batting. They never showed the will to fight, especially the batsmen, who seemed to be in a hurry to err with a vengeance in every innings and make a procession to the pavilion. One can safely assume that any team would have fought with more spirit and as a unit, instead of as a defeatist, negative, disjointed individuals.

Yes you are right Bhogle. Umesh yadav need to learn and lot so is Ashwin. As a Captain Dhoni should have should him the ay, but failed miserably. He is good One day Captain not a Test captain. he does not have interest in Test Cricket, since he is only after Money.First Test we should have Won, but Collective failure by all top Oder Batsmen including Dhoni.
let him be Only One Captain. Zaheer is wonderful bowler, but he needs Rest for another few months to Recover

first of all Australia had a game plan against the 4 big stars-Lakshman,Rahul,Sachin,shewag and they were clear that sachin does not make 100th Ton in the tests and proved right and except Kohli nobody made a Ton.very shameful not b'cos of wins or No Tons, they way and attitude...thats tells about lack of seriousness, complacency and over confidence and we are supposed to best and kings only in india and maybe once or twice we proved to be good on foreign soil but no consistency...and therefor its apt to say Sunil Gavaskar is the only batsmen-the best opener and batsman to have fast bowling in WI/England/Australia and his 24 /34 centuries came against them outside India and focus/determination & concentration should be learned from Him and its appropriate that he be made the Batting Coach for India and in India fast pitches--grass and green pitches to be made and more Zaheer khan's and Umesh Yadavs to be produced and more importantly consistent attitude batsman to face Tigers like Australia....Congrats Kangaroos..u really made Indians run.....

I think it is a little unfair to blame the bowlers for bad performance when they were never given a field setting that helped them take wickets! While Australia played with 4 slips and caught any chance given to them, our bowlers had to make do with 1 or at most 2 slips. How many would be catches went for fours through the non-existent slips! It almost seemed that the Indian team management had decided the bowlers couldn't be trusted to take wickets and never gave them a chance...even when they were actually doing well. Time and time again, we saw the first 3 or 4 Australian wickets fall quickly and then inexplicably the field spreads out, giving them a chance to stabilize. I think the strategy is more to blame than the bowlers.

Well said about Yadav, Mr. Bhogle, but Ganguly believes line and length bowling even at 135 kmph is good enough than a wayward bowling at140+ kmph. Anyway unless the stalwarts like Shewag, Laxman, Dravid and Sachin retire in the order in the next 3 or 4 tests, India will struggle atleast for the next few years. Certainly IPL should be pushed to once in two years, Ranji Trophy should be given priority, pitches should be more sportive. Above all a test cricketer should be leading the board and administrative people should support him and not other way round as its happening now.

Kindly Ban IPL, IF IPL is there defiently indian cricket will demolish very soon, we request the BCCI kinldy BAN THE IPL AND IF NOT I REQUEST THE INDIAN FANS NOT FOLLOW THE IPL, IPL IS THE MONEY MAKING MACHINE FOR BCCI AND DEMOLISHING MACHINE FOR INDIAN CRICKET

Masters on Papers have become disciples of Australian Team.Rise up BCCI you have selected a team to go and enjoy vacation instead of playing cricket.Wake up at least for the ODI's and T-20's or else the new team of Australia will beat us very easily.

I dont get this article. India have gems in the form of Ishant, Yadav and Aaron. These guys are young and promising. We still have to see what Irfan pathan can contribute. Zaheer and Agarkar were a tandem. The future of Indian fast bowling looks great, just requires a down period to allow youngsters to get International experience.

IRFAN PHATAN WOULD HAVE GREAT CHOICE ON THE AUSTRALIAN PITCHES, BUT SADLY HE DIDN'T PICKED. HE IS THE GUY WHO WILL SWUNG THE BALL AND GOOD TO BAT DOWN THE ORDER.

Yes ,a good perceiver and better talker who has understood the fast bowling without ever playing the game but only creating controversies, and giving unsporting comments on the highly experienced players. Why not the talker go and mentor Yadav,Ishant and the like Imran Khan did to Wasim by standing at mid-off and mid- on but not by simply talking in to the mike,as he only seems to understand the fast bowling, typical Indian way of participating in the game by only learning the words used in the game.Hats-off to such armchair talkers and non-players who are multiplying day by day in our country.
