    India debates Tendulkar's one-day future

Fans have been left on tenterhooks as Tendulkar struggles to reach the unprecedented milestone of 100 international hundreds.

New Delhi, February 23 (AFP): India's cricket greats have begun talking about a topic that was considered unthinkable a year ago - Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from the sport.

Or, at least, the need for the record-breaking batsman to quit one-day cricket to prolong his Test career, like former Australian captain Ricky Ponting did this week.

"Maybe his time has come," former World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev said of the "Little Master" on the Headlines Today news channel. "Every player has his time. Age is not on his side as it was earlier."

Tendulkar, who turns 39 in April, is not only the world's leading batsman in both the Test and one-day formats, but also the longest-serving international cricketer, having made his debut in 1989.

    Also read:

Fans have been left on tenterhooks as Tendulkar, who has scored a record 51 Test and 48 one-day centuries, struggles to reach the unprecedented milestone of 100 international hundreds.

Tendulkar has now gone 11 Tests and nine one-day internationals (ODIs) without a century since making 111 against South Africa in the World Cup in March last year.

It is the longest gap for the prolific batsman without a three-figure knock, even though scores of 85, 91, 94 and 80 in the interim suggest his form has not deserted him.

The immediate spark for talk of Tendulkar quitting is his indifferent run in the ongoing tri-series in Australia where he has managed just 90 runs in five games at an average of 18.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly, who played alongside Tendulkar from 1992 to 2008, said his ex-teammate's decision to pick and choose one-day matches was costing India dear.

"Sachin has to ask himself whether it's helping him as a one-day player or if it's helping the Indian team," Ganguly told Headlines Today.

"If Sachin can't get an answer to these questions, he has to go."

Tendulkar, who has played a record 458 one-day internationals, has turned out in just 18 ODI matches in the past two years, including nine in India's triumphant World Cup campaign in February-April 2011.

He still managed to record the first ever double-century in ODIs - 200 not out against South Africa in February 2010 - and was the star performer in India's World Cup win with 482 runs, second only to Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan's 500.

"It affects everyone's form if Tendulkar keeps coming in and going out of one-day tournaments," Ganguly said. "I said after the World Cup that Sachin needed to look at his one-day career because he had achieved everything in one-day cricket."

Ganguly dismissed batting legend Sunil Gavaskar's suggestion that the selectors should talk to Tendulkar
    about his one-day future.

"I don't see any of the selectors stepping in," Ganguly said. "They are not going to stand in front of Sachin Tendulkar and say 'Listen little champ, you need to go'. That is never going to happen."

The Hindu newspaper urged former players to lay off Tendulkar, saying the decision to quit or not should be left to him.

"A lot has been said - especially by former sportspersons who themselves stayed on well beyond their use-by date - about Tendulkar's ODI career," the paper wrote.

"Whatever the intentions, these gems of seemingly timely advice are clearly uncalled for. Sachin has served the country with exceptional pride and genius for far too long and he deserves the right to choose his own time of departure."

In the immediate term, Tendulkar has two games - against Australia on Sunday and Sri Lanka next Tuesday - and a possible best-of-three-finals if India qualify, to silence his critics.

To Mr. MS Dhoni and all critics:-

When Sachin Tendulkar went to Pakistan to face one of the finnest attacks ever assembled in cricket,
Michael schumacher was yet to race a F1 car,
Lance Armstrong had never been to Tour De France,
Diego Maradona was still the captain of world champion team Argentina Team,
Pete sampras had never won a grand slam When Tendulkar embarked on a glorious career taming Imran n company,
Roger federer was a name unheard of,
Lionel Messi was still in his Nappies,
Ussain bolt was a unknown kid in jamaica,
Time stands frozen in front of Sachin Tendulkar.
      We have had Champions.
      We had legend.
But we have never had Another Sachin Tendulkar and we never will :)

@ Prashant...why to Dhoni...this is jus for the critics, right???
      • Prashant 2 months ago
@Mrinal: Dhoni said in his statement to press conference that some senior players(indiretly Sachin due to his bad form) are lazy in the field due to which our team gives 20-25 more runs to the opposition...and they should not be played together and more and more youngsters should be give the chance... i would ask what did parthiv patel did in last match?? and rohit sharma is getting chances in series and dint cashed even single time he is just fielding well...and what to say about vinay kumar ...i really hate that guy ...he is worthless in the team no pace no bounce no swing...and they are dying and crying to give youngster chances...its really pathetic

Its very painful to watch India Fail. If India had done well , it doesn't concern us. When it doesn't then we analyze the situation . What India needs today , is it Winning the series or throwing Sachin out ? How could u expect a man to score 100runs every time he comes to crease ?
Sehwag too doesn't fire , to put it in a appropriate way , he throws his wicket . So literally a openers position is wasted , Tell me one good Opener IN THE CURRENT SCENARIO ,Other than sachin who could perform better . Leave the AGE factor , he might be 16 or 18 or 27 ,,,,who could be a better opener for India , (GAM/SAC/SEH)
sehwag is the worst performer in this tour , and out of the 3 openers SACHIN definitely deserves his spot ,SEHWAG doesn't deserve a spot not because he is bad player but he doesnt want to loose his name "dashing sehwag " He never tries to get his eye in , simply he throws his wicket away ?
Next , has not even a single team won a cricket match without their openers performing well , what for no 3,4,5,6, are there in the team ,
SACHIN didn't perform accepted , What did Our Young RAINA , R.SHARMA do .Dont bring the fielding bullshit into play , SACHIN is a far better fielder than SEHWAG and GAMBHIR.
A team like AUSTRALIA has 8 to 9 good fielders , u cant have a RAINA or KOHLI to in all the 9 spots in the field . u need some other players too.

And im sure that I will be abused by my fellow countrymen , But Even if the Great SACHIN who made INDIANS feel happy and keep their heads high for the past 20 years , is abused who am i before this nation ?

Even now he will not feel that HE can be dropped or DIDN'T get his 100th Hundred ,
he will feel that he had let his Nation DOWN .
AND the Biggest joke of the Era is GANGULY saying , "INDIA is not performing well because of SACHIN" , if one mans pressure can hold back a team ,what could 120 crore people's pressure can do ?????

I do not understand why we talk of his (Sachin's) retriement when the team is not performing well. Team consists of 11 players and all have responsibilty to do their part. Let him play as much as he can. His presence in the team will boost the confidence of youngsters. Being the greatest batsman in the world , he should be allowed to decide him self only regarding his retirement.

WHEN TEAM LOST MATCHES ONLY SACHIN HAS TO BEAR THE LOSS AND WHEN TEAM WIN THE MATCHED ENTIRE TEAM GETS PROFIT.
      • Navin 2 months ago
Bear the Loss?? OMG. Your statements are not only meaningless, they are funny too. Cricket is a team game. Cool it man. The world existed before cricket and will continue to do so after tooo

All those who are talking and saying Sachin must take retirement.....just a simple question for them.....give the name of any cricketer match Sachin, do you really think there is any replacement of Sachin? Raina, Kohali who....no1 without Sachin the Indian team is half... :-) soon Sachin put shit in mouth of those who are saying about his retirement....

as if nobody came after PELE/MARADONA/BRADMAN/LAVER etc! As if Sachin did not arrive after Sunil monohar gavaskar??? Sport will always come up with greats of an era!

They need to question themselves before commenting on Master's performance that if they are really worth for that. He definitely deserves his right to decide and cricket without Sachin is *)(*)*)&)(&*(&*(&(^*(*&).
What about the other 10. Why Dhoni is still deserving his place in TEST. If compared at any point of time Sachin's contribution is always remarkable and not commentable.

Sachin, has gone through similar situation earlier also.....he will definitely overcome this and once again everyone will see Sachin talking with his bat ti the critics... Leave him alone and think about the others in the team.

Ganguly is right. But we should only talk about his performance not his retirement. Because there are many other players in the team who are not performing better than little master. What about this? Sachin scored some reasonable runs in the test series unlike other batsmen who need to get extra coaching on how to bat in a test match. If Sachin still thinks he can play and play well at his age, he must defenately be in a condition (physical and mental) to play at international level. The only this is that he is playing less cricket presently and and not making hundreds. Please compare his batting average in the last two years not with his own batting average in the last two decades but with the other equally important batsmen in the team. You will find many answers.

Please stop asking him go. You are insulting him. Let him decide when to go. And he is defenately not the worst performer in the team. Talk about other players. And stop talking about his 100th International tonne.

look who are saying all this? Kapil Dev & ganguly, who did all to remain in team when they were not even doing 1% of what sachin is doing even at present times. Look before you leap bhaji!

From 1983 to 2011 Kapil and his team bragged about winning the world cup.Couldn't get over it till we won it again...txs to Sachin and others. Now he has nothing much to say.Shut up Kapil...take a break.

Yes, I agree with Ganguly ! A person should should talk about his performance not his Retirment becoz Gavaskars Time is Up, They dont have any right to comment on who should retire when.
Don't wory Sachin Will not retire till he gets his hundred, he is just a little Frustrated and needs a break maybe a long one would be better.

Well I think Australia's Batting line up is so strong that Ponting really had no space in the team anymore and was wasting a position because if either of the Husseys were in any other team in the world, they would be the Star batsmen playing 1 down or 2 down. Thats goes to show how strong Australia's Batting is.

On the Contrary, India's batting barely compares to that of Australia and I cannot think of any batsmen apart from 1 or 2 that are doing better or are more Reliable than Tendulkar. Even right now because the whole team is practically failing.

As an indian with cricket being our most loved game let us have a indian sachin to get his 100 centuries in whatever format he chooses to play.we are not loosing the series b'cos of sachin and lets respect sachin to call it a day he chooses.Let the best captain ever "DHONI" learn to respect senior players with dignity so that others follow the suit.
