Hussey, Tendulkar in umpiring controversies in Sydney

Sydney: Umpiring controversies have been Indian cricket’s steady companions through two disastrous tours of England and Australia. Today, the relationship breached new grounds in the Sydney ODI.

In the Australian innings, India appealed against David Hussey for what seemed a case of both handling the ball and obstructing the field. On-field umpires Simon Taufel and Billy Bowden in consultation with TV umpire Simon Fry ruled in Hussey’s favour.

Later as India chased, non-striker Sachin Tendulkar was run-out attempting a quick single off Brett Lee, who accidentally blocked Tendulkar’s way. David Warner scored the direct hit to run out Tendulkar, who expressed his displeasure at the strange dismissal. The umpires again had a consultation but there seemed no element of unfair play here.

As he went after the ball, Lee had his back to Tendulkar, who came charging down from the bowler's end but had to change directions to avoid running into the bowler.

In the 24th over of the Australian innings, Hussey held up his right hand to prevent Suresh Raina’s throw from hitting him as he ran towards the bowler’s end for a single. India instantly appealed. After being turned down, India captain MS Dhoni was seen having an argument with Bowden.

Cricket’s Law 33.1 (Handling The Ball) says, “(A) - Either batsman is out handled the ball if he wilfully touches the ball while in play with a hand or hands not holding the bat unless he does so with the consent of a fielder, or (B) - Either batsman is out under this Law if, while the ball is in play, and without the consent of a fielder, he uses his hand or hands not holding the bat to return the ball to any fielder.”

However, Law 33.2 says the batsman can be reprieved if he handles the ball to avoid injury, which is what seemed to have saved Hussey. Dhoni was heard on the stump microphone arguing with Bowden that the ball was six inches away from Hussey and he could not have got injured.

Hussey’s case seemed a good example for Obstructing The Field, which is dealt by Law 37. Hussey was out of his crease and blocked the ball from completing a run-out.

In 2006, Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq was out for obstructing the field in an ODI against India. Raina was the thrower on that occasion as well.

In a game when Sri lanka played England,Angelo Matthews was put in the same situation as Tendulkar. However the England captain called Matthews back.Frankly as a neutral spectator I expected the Aussies to call back Sachin. It was disappointing it didn't happen.Perhaps if Clarke was there things could have turned out different.
      • Harris 2 months ago
I agree, Aussies don't really play with the biggest heart! It was shameful to see Sachin getting out like that especially when he's been playing so well!

Nothing is in favour of India.

Sachin is really in a great touch today as you can find it from his few good shots and his positive body language. He sets himself to score the most awaited 100th ton but his dismissal is very unfortunate not only for him but for India.

Very tough time for India but don't worry things will change we are with you.

I don't want to blame umpires or Australians or our batsmen (though they deserve blaming) or BCCI or pitches or whomsoever or whatsoever.

It requires even a greater strength to accept when things are against us but the very pity thing is our own decisions are against us through out this series.

History and we all will remember this series for many long years as we've remembered and cherished the day you brought us world cup in 2011.

About Dhoni i am really proud of you man. You really fought hard against all odds and you are the first Indian captian and fighter that i see and believe the best of all i have seen right from the day i started watching cricket (in 1996). I am with you though most of the so called experts and analysts are against you.

And Yuvarj we miss you so badly get well soon.

And BCCI, Thanks a lot for all as you always make sure that Indian cricket is in proper shape and order to make more money and satisfy the interests of all others except those who really love to watch India as a strongest team of all.

So CBI series is over now Come Back to India we have a greater series called IPL.

you people doesn't know , ICC, Umpires and all other cricket playing nations are united against India's UDRS Omitting, so they are putting pressure by faulty decisions thru field & third umpires, then finally india will agree to Use UDRS, this what diplamaticaly ICC playing. sorry to indian team & Spectators against the Hussey review. In near furture india could get more umpairing error upto India to agree to use the UDRS.

Bret Lee knew what he did was deliberately done, he is lying on what he tweeted, its all lie , Australians are never known for sportsman spirit, what saves them is that they act very smartly and know the laws very well and use them to their benefit. Bret lee acted that he was going towards point but stoped and came just right of the pitch where normally a non striker runs, if you see the clip you will see that after Tendulkar was out he did not even look towrads Tendulkar to express that it was not done intentionally, how could he he had no Balls to confront the Great Sachin. If this could have been done by any Indian everyone could have seen the wolf cry of the Australians. Mr. Bret Lee GO TO CHURCH AND CONFESS, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID............

that is why we need DRS, even if its not 100% accurate, simon taufel is not having a great run this year. lot of errors by him during eng-pak test series and were changed by DRS.
I know critics like shastri and gavaskar and BCCI are against it but its time to start thinking about it, even if it has 20% error, still can get 80% result.
Sorry to say BCCI is always against change and late to adapt. i still remember they were they only board who was against 20-20 cricket and it was only when they saw how popular its becoming after ICL that they destroyed ICL in the name of IPL and now earning millions and millions from it.
So please BCCI its time to think about DRS and also though it was a bad day by bad decisions by umpire, team india need to remove its internal differences and think about 2015 world cup as it will b in australia and new zealand.

Keeping aside of the effect of two run-outs on the result of the match, it is sportsmanship point. Is it applicable only to Indian players? In case of Ashwin's Mankading against Sri Lanka batsman who was even earlier warned by the bowler, everybody was commenting about sportsmanship. But in case of Hussey, the laws were clearly against him. He should have straightaway been given out by on-field umpire and the decision to allow him to bat or not, should have been given to Dhoni & Co. Hussey cannot take protection under law that the ball would have hurt him and it was atleast six inches away and not hitting his face or head. Again in case of Tendulkar, Lee had no business at all to move in that direction as a fielder was already posted there and it was deliberate attempt to block the way of batsman. So, onfield umpires today successfully saw India out of finals!

i dont think there was any cheating on the part of the aussies nor any partial umpiring from billybowden or simon touffel. we played badly and deserved to loose.just that is all. we are not capable of adapting to other countries pitches. we are roaring lions on our placid spinning pitches only. we would not have even won the world cup if it were not played in India.last time. How many of the front line batsmen say top six have the correct batting technique.First the slection committee should be dismissed and this zonal representation should be stopped. merit should be the only criterion for selection of players. playersshould be cent percent fit at the time of selection. we should stop treating our cricketers as demi gods. let them earn that by their performance. also the board should reconsider all this huge payments even for zero performance. we shouted we are number one in the world and went around paying crores for one sixer or six sixers. and we have been hit for sixer inboth test and one day.stop this touring 350 days a year and instead make all these people play at least a few ranji matches duleep trophy etc. does anybody feel that ravindra jadeja is worth 10 crors after you have seen his performane in australia?

    • nayum  •  New Delhi, Delhi  •  2 months ago
It was clear that Hussey was trying to avoid injury, also its cleary mentioned in the law that if the batsmen wilfully does the act he is out else not out. Whereas abt Tendulkar was run out it was unfair.

    • Pintu  •  Pune, Maharashtra  •  2 months ago
That was third umpire's mistake who dint see any problem with David Hussey. But David, you purposefully stretched your hand to stop the throw. And you know that. Shame on you and if you still play cricket.

MSD could have done a far more protest like wearing a black band on there arm.. It might be too harsh but hussey n lee where not playing in right sprite of the game.. More over the umpires were so shabby n not convincing. Aus know for doing it time n again but then also no one learns from past. hwy what's an match referee is doing.. he has gone for a nap.. India shouldnt come under pressure cause this might be seen as a pressure tactics for Mr. DRS...
