Pacer Ryan Harris, who played a dominant role with bat in Australia's first innings, was called from toilet to complete the nerve-racking climax of the run chase against the West Indies.

Conceding a 43-run first-innings deficit, Australia bowled out the Windies for 148 early on the final day before surviving a late scare to emerge victorious in fading light.

Harris was as shocked as small pocket of Australian fans in the crowd when he was promoted up to No. 8 for the run chase.

"I was actually in the toilet and they came running in to get me, I had no idea," said Harris, who was named man of the match for his unbeaten 68 in the first innings and five.

The gutsy paceman was present when Ben Hilfenhaus hit the winning runs as the pair played starring roles in reversing Australia's fortunes, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"I actually said to Mike Huss' before tea that I'd love to be out there at the end of a Test match and hit the winning runs. I didn't do that but I was out there, it was a good feeling," Harris said.

Jubilation turned to confusion then more ecstasy for the pair, locked in a warm embrace, as they waited for the green light from the third umpire over a possible run out.

"He said he was [confident], then he wasn't, then we heard the roar from up on the balcony and we knew we were home," Harris said.

Harris said the game was "one of the hardest Test matches I've played in my short career".
