Ranchi, Jan. 25: As many as 16 policemen of Jharkhand were named for prestigious medals awarded by the Union home ministry on the eve of Republic Day.
While special branch superintendent Prashant Kumar Karn has been selected for the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service, three other policemen would be conferred with Police Medal for Gallantry. They include sub-inspector Rati Bhan Singh, constables Parmeshwar Tudu and Francis Toppo.
Among those who would receive Police Medal for Meritorious Service were Sampat Meena, inspector general of police (organised crime) and Dadan Ji Sharma, deputy inspector general of police, Santhal Pargana range (see chart).
Sampat Meena, a 1994 batch IPS officer, is known for her work on improving policing for women and children. Credit goes to her for opening Ranchi's only police station dedicated to serve women at Kotwali and a Bal Mitra police station for children at Gonda and Jagannathpur.
As an IG (organised crime), she also contributed to combatting human trafficking.
"Credit for this (award) goes to all those who had motivated me during 18 years of my police service. I am happy that the department recognised my good work. This is the first award I am getting as police officer," she said.
Karn said, "This is the highest award I have bagged in my 26-year career as police officer. The credit goes to my family members, colleagues and senior officers."
