Sunday was certainly a super day for Unmukt Chand. Captain and man of the final of the under-19 World Cup, Chand was showered with praises from every corner.
But nothing would please him more than the words of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is himself a two-time World Cup winner.
Reactions also came in from The Master, Sachin Tendulkar, himself, as also from some of the players who featured in the Indian XI which beat New Zealand in the Hyderabad Test, on Sunday.
Also in Chand & Co.’s admirers’ list was Chris Gayle.
Here’s what some of them had to say (alphabetically):
Wasim Akram: As a whole package, (Unmukt) Chand is excellent… This guy is very special and I hope the Indian selectors are looking at him because Ian Chappell has been saying, we have been saying that Chand is ready for India. It's been our privilege to see the innings Chand played today. It's the best innings in U-19 cricket that I have ever seen. I think a couple of players are ready to play for India ‘A’, or may be for the Indian team… Sandeep Sharma and Chand.
Ravichandran Ashwin: We were watching it together and wanted them to win. I woke up at 5 ’clock this morning to watch what’s happening… This victory means much more to the team because it happened in Australia. We did not have a great season there sometime back, so I’m very pleased that they put one across this time around.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Congratulations to the boys… Chand batted really well.
Sourav Ganguly: It’s a fabulous achievement… I saw the game on TV. Winning a World Cup in Australia is a special achievement. So, from that point of view, congratulations to the under-19 boys. Unmukt Chand and his team, they played fabulously. They were four wickets down, chasing 226 in a World Cup final and the captain came and got a hundred. So, it is a fabulous achievement.
Chris Gayle (Twitter): Great news. India won the U-19 world cup. India beat Australia in world cup Final. Congrats team India.
Virat Kohli: With it raining here (in Hyderabad), we were watching on television very keenly... Having played at the U-19 level, I know how the feeling is... How special it is to win the World Cup... When you have been together for a long period of time, and especially in Australian conditions… We would love to wish the cricketers… Especially Unmukt and the way he batted... Enjoy the moment. Cherish it... It’s going to stay with you for the rest of your life as it has for mine.
Suresh Raina (Twitter): This is called a Super Sunday. Champions in U19 World Cup. Awesome batting Unmukt! And Phenomenal bowling by Ashwin to 1 up in tests!!
Virender Sehwag (Twitter): Well done young team india.
Harbhajan Singh (Twitter): Champions champions champions. Well done India U-19 boys for bringing another world cup home. Very proud of u all. So happy. God bless u all.
Yuvraj Singh (Twitter): Proud of the colts!! Congratulations to the u-19 boys for winning the world cup! well played captain “Congratulations”
@UnmuktChand9: puttar cha gaya tu! Congratulations to u and ur team! Meri taraf se sabko wish kardo aur meri jurabey laana mat bhoolio
Sachin Tendulkar: We were watching and following what was going on in the final in our dressing room. I would like to congratulate the team and tell them that you guys made us proud by raising that beautiful trophy.
Manoj Tiwary (Twitter): Thank you India U-19 Team for making us proud by winning the World Cup trophy. And great inning by @UnmuktChand9 and well played Smit Patel.
Abhinav Bindra: Well done Unmukt Chand! Great to watch. Congrats to the team!.......
Chand batted really well: Dhoni
