Guwahati, Dec. 28: A swashbuckling ton by A.S. Saha put hosts Bengal in the driver's seat against Assam on the second day of the three-day East Zone match in the Vijay Merchant Trophy (Under-16) tournament at the CAB Cricket Academy ground at Kalyani today.
At stumps, Bengal were comfortably placed at 297 for five in 65 overs.
Saha raced to 103 off 139 balls in his marathon innings (192 minutes) to put the Assam bowlers on the backfoot.
He was supported at the other end by Subham Saha (43), A.S. Pant (retired hurt, 42) and I.M. Ansari (39).
The visitors, after the poor show yesterday, when they were bundled out for 151, had little to cheer as the opposition accumulated the runs.
Left arm off-spinner Hrishikesh Bora was the pick of the bowlers with figures of two for 51.
Offie Bikash Terang and leg-spinner Urooj Rizvi took a wicket each.
With five points in the kitty, Assam will have to bring out something special tomorrow to hold the hosts to a draw.
Bengal, who have seven points, will go for a win and add six points to their tally.
Assam's Reema Malhotra has been selected in the Indian squad for the ICC Women's World Cup 2013 to be held in the country from January 27 to February 18, sources in the Assam Cricket Association said.
Self-defence: The 1st All-Assam state-level self-defence championship will get under way at IB Field, Goreswar in Baksa district from tomorrow.
