With a seating of 40,000, it hosted its first test between India and New Zealand from January 6-11, 1956. It hosts football (soccer), and athletic competitions during the off season (when cricket isn't played). The complex also houses a multi-purpose indoor stadium with a seating capacity of 8000 which hosts volleyball, basket ball and table tennis. Now named after India's first Prime Minister, it was earlier called the Corporation Stadium.
