Having hosted its first ODI between India and Australia on September 28, 1984, it has come a long way since then. It was built by the Government of India in 1982. This massive ground seats 1,00,000 spectators. The stadium that was originally constructed to host the 9th Asian Games in 1982, now houses the headquarters of the Indian Olympic Association. Besides cricket, it is party to football and other sporting activities as well.
