Australia, the defending champions will launch their 2009 campaign against West Indies, the runners-up of the 2006 event. These two sides contested the last Champions Trophy final, in India, where the Australians came out with their A-game, and rolled the West Indies over for 138. They then knocked off the runs with ease despite a rain delay, to overcome their jinx and add the one trophy that was missing from their collection. This will be the second Group A encounter for West Indies, after they lost their opening game to Pakistan by 5 wickets. The only highlight for the Islanders was their new ball bowler Gavin Tonge's performance. The 26-year-old revelled on a responsive surface, finishing with four for 25. Australia on the other hand are without Michael Clarke. The vice captain has been ruled out of this encounter with recurring back problems that continue to disrupt his career. He aggravated the problem towards the end of the long ODI series in England. The standoff between the West Indies Cricket board and players has resulted in their star performers missing from the action, replaced by a second string team which is yet to win an international game.

19.1 D Bernard to Paine, OUT! Pitched on good length and Paine wanted to drive it through the off side. The ball was not close enough and ended up getting an outside edge. Walton takes a straight forward catch. Umpire Hill raises his finger. Australia have lost their second wicket.

30.3 N Miller to Ponting, OUT! It was pitched way outside off and Ponting was lured into the shot. He was way forward and Walton wasted no time in dismissing the stumps. Walton has knocked the bails over. Set Ponting departs. Umpire Rauf raises his finger. Australia have lost their fourth wicket.

25.2 D Bernard to Hussey, OUT! A short delivery from Bernard and Hussey wanted to pull it. The bounce wasn't much and Hussey picked it around his waist length. He got an top edge and Fletcher at fine leg pouches the catch. Australia have lost their third wicket.

35.3 K Roach to Ferguson, OUT! Bowled! Good length ball just outside off. Ferguson has played that onto his stumps. It looked odd as Ferguson's angle of the bat was in a slanting position. Australia have lost their sixth wicket.

34.5 N Miller to C White, OUT! What a ball. Full length delivery on middle and off. White could never pick the line as he was stuck on the back foot. The off stump is out of the ground. Australia have lost their fifth wicket.

39.2 D Sammy to Hopes, OUT, Sammy bowls a nagging line and Hopes looked to drive on the up. He gets a faint edge to Walton. That is easy pickings for Walton. The fielding side are asking the question. Umpire Hill declares Hopes OUT. Sammy richly deserved this wicket. Australia have lost their seventh wicket.

47.6 K Roach to Lee, RUN OUT, It was a slower delivery and Lee got a top edge towards third man. They ran two and Lee wanted to go for the third one too. He charged down a few yards but Johnson sent him back as he had a better angel. Lee stopped and ran again but it was too late. Walton collects the ball cleanly to run Lee out. Umpire Hill declares Lee OUT. Australia have lost their eighth wicket.

5.4 Siddle to Smith, OUT! A nasty bouncer and Smith tried to pull in unconvincing fashion. The ball was about his head height and he seem to have got an edge. Easy catch for Paine behind the stumps. A strong appeal from Siddle and fielders. Umpire Hill raises the dreaded finger. West Indies have lost their first wicket.

24.3 B Lee to Fletcher, RUN OUT! Not very smart running from Fletcher. He hit straight to mid-off and Johnson collected the ball in one go and aimed straight at the stumps. Fletcher was not even in the frame. The Third Umpire has been called for by Umpire Rauf. Red signal by the Third Umpire sends Fletcher back to the pavillion. West Indies have lost their second wicket.

36.4 Lee to T Dowlin, OUT! Whoa, what a catch! It was pitched short, Dowling got a top edge and Paine ran backwards and dived full length in front to hold on to it. Dowling goes for a well made 55. West Indies have lost their fourth wicket.

25.2 J Hopes to Walton, OUT! Bowled! Walton has played that onto his stumps. He tried to slog the ball but the ball was too close for comfort. Not an ideal shot when you are yet to oepn your account. West Indies have lost their third wicket.

44.5 S Watson to Reifer, OUT! Good length ball on middle. Played to the point region by Reifer. That has gone straight into Hauritz's hands. West Indies have lost their seventh wicket.

39.1 P Siddle to Bernard, OUT! Bowled him! A perfect yorker from Siddle. Bernard makes room for himself and finds his middle stump has just gone for a walk. West Indies have lost their fifth wicket.

44.1 S Watson to Sammy, Full toss OUT, Sammy has taken the risk and lofted it over the covers. It's been taken at the boundary by Hussey. It was a full toss bowled at his waist height. West Indies have lost their sixth wicket.

46.4 N Hauritz to Miller, OUT! Full length delivery on middle and leg. Miller tries to sweep, gets a top edge on that one. It's high in the air and taken by Ponting. West Indies have lost their eighth wicket.

46.5 N Hauritz to Roach, OUT! Two in two balls. Good length ball just outside off. Roach gets a top edge on that one. That is easy pickings for Johnson who makes no mistake. West Indies have lost their ninth wicket. Hauritz is on a hat-trick but Australia have won the match as Dale Richards won't bat in this match due to ill health. Australia win by 50 runs.
