India hold on for dullest draw

Half an hour into the second session, the man with the most runs in international cricket 30,065 as you're reading this was at the crease; all straight lines, head still, bat steady. Jogging in to bowl at him, eyebrows arched high over his unblinking eyes, arms weaving invisible patterns in the air, was the man with the most number of wickets in international cricket 1,309 in all forms of the game.

Harmeet spins Mumbai to hard-fought victory

It has been a discouraging period for spinners in India. Over the last two weeks, it's not their flight or guile but the legality of their actions and the degrees of their arms while bowling that have been under the spotlight. The BCCI has taken a stern view of the chucking issue this season, and if ever spin in India required an antidote it was now. It came in the form of Mumbai's 17-year-old debutant, Harmeet Singh, at the BKC ground against Himachal Pradesh.

Tail does the job as UP grab first-innings lead

With more fluctuations than a faulty voltmeter, the advantage oscillated between Uttar Pradesh and Baroda during Day Three of their Ranji match, where three points for the first-innings lead were up for grabs. Halfway through the post-lunch session, the visitors' had their tails up as UP were reeling at 195 for eight still 39 runs adrift of Baroda's score of 234. But Praveen Gupta (32) and RP Singh (13 not out) finished as the unlikely heroes for the home side, seeing the team through to a slender six-run first-innings lead. And by stumps on the penultimate day, Mohammad Kaif & co could sniff an outright victory as Baroda stumbled to 60/3.

The Pimpri Panthers have roped in Yogesh Takawale, the right-hand wicket-keeper batsman who played for the Mumbai Indians team in IPL II, to play in their team. This will be a big boost for the Panthers as well as the tournament in general as Takawale brings with him international experience.

    Mahela makes it a double

India must've gone into lunch thinking they had a chance. They hadn't set the session on fire, but had still landed a couple of important blows. Thilan Samaraweera had fallen after making 70, while Angelo Mathews was unlucky to be given out caught at short-leg at the stroke of lunch. Sri Lanka were still 51 behind on the first innings, and they had a foot in the door. Who would've thought gentle, soft-spoken Mahela Jayawardene would slam it shut so hard?

Struggling spinners put India on defensive

Harbhajan Singh's bowling fortunes aren't changing no matter how hard he's trying in recent weeks. While he did get lucky to pick up a wicket Angelo Matthews was given out caught at forward short-leg but replays suggested there was no nick his day proved as futile as many others in the recent past.

    Pujara back with a bang

Cheteshwar Pujara's six months injury break from cricket, due to a freak fall in April, forced him to miss two major T20 tournaments the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders and the Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Saurashtra. Before his comeback, Pujara had spoken about the trauma of uncertainty. But after his 203 not out on Day Two of the Ranji match against Maharashtra, he saw the silver lining.

Sarandeep in the dock as Mumbai fight back

It has been over 10 years since Sarandeep Singh made his first-class debut. Apart from having played three Tests and five ODIs for India, he has also represented three states in domestic cricket during his decade-long career. But when umpire Sanjeev Rao no-balled Sarandeep during Mumbai's chase at the BKC stadium on Wednesday, the 30-year-old off-spinner experienced a new yet unfortunate event.
