Muzumdar breaks batting record
Mumbai, Nov. 6 -- Sachin Tendulkar took the elevator, Vinod Kambli the staircase but their other curly haired schoolmate, Amol Muzumdar, could just not make it to the top-flight.
Muzumdar is one of the Sharadashram English School's alumni, who will not be spoken of in the same breath as the Tendulkars and Kamblis. But on Friday, the unassuming batsman carved out a name for himself in the annals of domestic cricket by becoming the highest scorer in Ranji Trophy.
The 34-year-old Assam captain and Mumbai discard surpassed Amarjeet Kaypee, when he scored nine runs in the second innings against Rajasthan in a Group A Plate match here on Friday. Assam lost the match by 95 runs.
Needing 31 runs to reach the landmark, Muzumdar scored 22 runs in the first innings and 25 in the second. He now stands on top of the run-aggregate list with 7,640 runs, 17 more than Kaypee's 7,623.
Though it was quite certain that Muzumdar would break Kaypee's record, even he would not have guessed that the moment would come in the nondescript Northeast Railway Stadium in Guwahati. He made his debut for Mumbai with a brilliant 260 against Haryana in 1994-95 season. He later captained the team winning seven Ranji Trophy titles.

Our team is not good enough to be called a school team. Even a school team in Sri Lanka will play better than this any other team in this world will show the will to fight. But not this team. Australian batsmen not in form their bowlers do well. When it’s bowlers not in form it’s batsmen do well. Indian’s are when it’s bowlers in form it’s batsmen also in form. When its batsmen are fail its bowlers also fail. That’s the different between two team.
