After scoring a Test century on debut, Suresh Raina was treated to a celebration dinner by Sachin Tendulkar. But before that, he took time off to speak to The Indian Express. Excerpts:
What was going through your head on Wednesday night
I was not tense. I knew that if Sachin (Tendulkar) and I can get a good partnership the match will be in our favour. My morale was good and Sachin kept telling me I was looking good at the wicket. I was learning from Sachin.
Your Test debut was unexpected.
Jo kismat mein hota hai woh milta hi hai. The satisfaction of making a hundred in a Test match is a completely different feeling.
The bouncer has troubled you in the past, but today you handled it well.
I had worked hard with regard to the bouncer. I knew they would come hard at me. I think people knew about it (bouncer). From here on it will be tougher. I will have to play on different wickets and against different bowlers. It has been a good learning process for me. Today, I just left the ball.
What does this hundred mean to you?
It is a different feeling. I have played 98 ODIs but people will ask me how many Tests I have played. I think when you score in Tests the amount of satisfaction, the respect and the applause you get is totally different. I got a lot of respect from team mates today. I know if I work hard I will cement my place.
Whom did you remember after reaching your century?
It's all because of my family and my brother. My brother has been telling me he wants to see me bat with Sachin when I make my Test debut. He helped me when I was injured in 2007 and throughout my cricket career. I remember the bad times. Time-time ki baat hai.
Did you play with a special bat?
It is the same bat with which I made a Twenty20 century; now I have made a Test hundred with it. Virender Sehwag had told me when I play for India he would present me a blue baggy cap. He gave me that today.
