Muralidaran became the first bowler in the annals of Test cricket to capture 800 wickets when he had PP Ojha caught by DPMD Jayawardene for 13 in the second innings of this Test.

Progressive milestones of his 800 wickets read thus:

First Wicket: CJ McDermott of Australia – lbw for 9 at Col-RPS in Aug 1992 in his first Test.

100th wicket: SP Fleming of New Zealand – bowled for 59 at Hamilton in Mar 1997 in his 27th Test.

200th wicket: DG Cork of England – caught by RS Kaluwitharana for 8 at The Oval in Aug 1998 in his 42nd Test.

300th wicket: SM Pollock of South Africa – caught by TM Dilshan for 11 at Durban in Dec 2000 in his 58th Test.

400th wicket: HK Olanga of Zimbabwe – bowled for zero at Galle in Jan 2002 in his 72nd Test.

500th wicket: MS Kasprowicz of Australia –bowled for zero at Kandy in Mar 2004 in his 87th Test.

600th wicket: Khaled Mashud of Bangladesh - caught by SL Malinga for 6 at Bogra in Mar 2006 in his 101st Test.

- R Dravid and SR Tendulkar added 119 runs for the third wicket in this game providing the 18th occasion of these two batsmen stitching a three figure partnership – the most between any two pair of batsmen in the annals of test cricket.

- R Dravid extended his world record of being a partner in a three figure partnership from the existing 81 to 82, while SR Tendulkar has it increased from 74 to 75. RT Ponting with 78 three figure partnerships to his credit occupies the second place below R Dravid. R Dravid, RT Ponting and SR Tendulkar are the only three batsmen in the annals of test cricket to have partnered 75 or more three figure partnerships.

- NT Paranavitana scored 111 in this test providing the 52nd occasion of a batsman scoring a Nelson {111 or 111 not out} in an innings in the annals of test cricket.  50th occasion is credited to R Dravid of India who had scored 111 against South Africa at Chennai in Mar 2008. 51st occasion is also in the name of R Dravid who scored 111 not out against Bangladesh at Dhaka in Jan 2010.

- NT Paranavitana became the fifth Sri Lankan batsman to score a Nelson in a test innings. Others are - LRD Mendis vs England at Lord's in Aug 1984, A Ranatunga vs India at Col-SSC in Aug 1985, SAR Silva vs India at Col-PSS in Sep 1985 and ST Jayasuriya vs India at Galle in Aug 2001.

- NT Paranavitana became the second Sri Lankan batsman to score a Nelson at Galle. ST Jayasuriya was the other batsman to score a Nelson against India in Aug 2001.

- NT Paranavitana became the fifth batsman to score a Nelson in a test innings against India. The other four are - AB Williams of West Indies at Kolkata in

Abhimanyu Mithun of Karnataka became the 20th bowler to earn India cap after achieving the hat-trick in Ranji Trophy or achieving the hat-trick after representing India as he made his test debut against Sri Lanka in the first test at Galle in Jul 2010.

Abhimanyu Mithun earned the distinction of becoming the fourth bowler to don the national colours after performing the hat-trick on debut in Ranji Trophy. The other three are - VB Ranjane, SA Ankola and J Srinath.

The following are the particular of these four bowlers who have performed the hat-trick on debut and played for India: VB Ranjane of Maharashta vs Saurashtra at Pune in 1956-57 : SA Ankola of Maharashta vs Gujarat at Pune in 1988-89 : J Srinath of Karnataka vs Hyderabad at Secunderabad in 1989-90 and A Mithun of Karnataka vs Uttar Pradesh at Meerut in 2009-10.

- A Mithun became the fourth bowler to don the India colours after performing the hat-trick on debut in Ranji Trophy. The other three are -VB Ranjane, SA Ankola and  J Srinath. A Mithun became the 20th bowler to earn India cap after achieving the hat trick in Ranji Trophy or achieving the hat trick after representing India.

- TM Dilshan became the first victim of debutant A Mithun. He was caught by wicket keeper by MS Dhoni for 25.
